Material for new album comes fast for The Cave Singers

Sometimes the things you are looking for happen when least expected.

This is the case with Derek Fudesco and music.

Fudesco is a member of the rock outfit The Cave Singers. While the trio was in between albums and working on solo material, out of nowhere popped up some of the material that would become the album “Banshee.”

“Pete (Quirk) made a solo album, and then slowly, we kind of starting getting together and making music,” he says. “Then all of a sudden the entire process went fast and we had ‘Banshee’ nearly wrapped up.”

“Banshee” brings The Cave Singers back to its original three-piece lineup: Quirk, Fudesco and Marty Lunda.

The album was recorded live in July 2015 over six days with producer Randall Dunn.

Fudesco says the record is warmly anchored in the members’ creative familiarity with one another.

“We’ve been a band for nearly a decade and put out a lot of music,” he says. “We’ve grown to know what each person is thinking and how we best make music. This is an album that came together quickly and has a lot of direction.”

On The Cave Singers’ current tour, the band will perform quite a bit of material from “Banshee.”

But Fudesco says playing the entire album would be “weird.”

“We’ve pulled out some songs that we’ve never played live off the old albums,” he says. “There are also songs that people have asked us to put into the set. The set evokes a lot of imagery and is very strong.”

With the band approaching its 10th anniversary, Fudesco is surprised at the amount of material the group has produced together.

He’s also humbled by the growth of the band, as well as the many new fans the band gains with each album.

“Making music is this magical thing,” he says. “The songs represent this relationship between me and my best friends. Once the songs are out in the world, they exist for everyone to hear. It’s a pretty powerful thing to be part of. We take our influences and create this music that bonds with the audience. That’s where the magic happens, and I wouldn’t trade it.”
