READY TO ROLL

AJ Woods releasing locally made album ‘Fence’ after years of work

- By Adrian Gomez

AJ Woods worked tirelessly for years. The fruits of his labor will be revealed in what he’s calling “The Fence.” And the Albuquerque-based Woods is taking a different approach to his album, which is being released on cassette, in addition to digital download.

“This is a collection of songs that I’ve been working on for a long time,” he says. “These are narratives and stories.”

Woods did the recording nearly a year ago, and his project is locally made.

Woods holed up at Keller Hall at the University of New Mexico, as well at Studio A at KUNM.

And his release party will be at the Guild Cinema.

“There have been a lot of people that have stepped up locally to help me,” he says. “Kief (Henley) at the Guild found a spot for me to have this release party. That’s a big support. The Guild is my favorite theater in town, and it has made me become a believer in film. It’s fitting to have my release party in one of my favorite spots of my hometown.”

There’s not a method to how Woods writes his music. Many of his songs take different routes, sometimes with ease, other times with many detours.

He describes his process as one that is fluid.

“The songs come to me and then process through me,” he says. “When it comes, I have to capture it. All I can really say is that it comes and goes through me. Then it exists for the world to hear.”

In addition to “The Fence,” Woods is releasing a project in which he recorded his songs at Keller Hall.

He always wanted to do a live album.

“There are about 15 songs on that project,” he says. “I haven’t really listened to it in years, but it’s something that I wanted to get released.”
