Songwriter takes a leap; festival season gets underway

Mishka Shubaly’s living arrangements have been stable for quite a while. That will soon change as the songwriter and author embarks on a national tour.

“It’s a lot to think about when I leave here,” he says. “I’m not going to be back. I’m going to be all over the country playing in dive bars. Then I’ll be teaching a class at Yale in June. I’ve been sleeping in treehouses, and now I feel like I’m packing for war. I have some things planned out, and then I have no plans at all.”

Shubaly is taking his tour to The City Different on Monday, April 11. He will be performing music from his past — which was full of drugs and rock ’n’ roll.

He has since turned his life around and been on the straight and narrow. He will be touring with Star Anna for 40 days.

“We’re great friends, and we’re going to be in a band together,” he says. “We’ll scream at each other and then become friends again. This is going to be a great tour.”

The sun should be out for the second annual Great New Mexico Food Truck & Craft Beer Festival on Saturday, April 9. The event will feature food, brews and crafts. Staff writer Rozanna M. Martinez takes a sneak peek at the festival. To read more, see Pages 16-17.

Assistant Arts Editor Kathaleen Roberts takes a look into the Linnell Festival of New Plays at the University of New Mexico. The plays begin tonight on UNM’s campus. To read more, see Page 21.
