Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta struggles, but helps Chicago beat St. Louis

ST. LOUIS — Jake Arrieta remained unbeaten on the season despite allowing as many as four runs for the first time in nearly a year and the Chicago Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals 9-8 on Wednesday.

Arrieta (9-0) joined Chris Sale of the Chicago White Sox as the only nine-game winners in the majors.

Arrieta allowed four runs in a regularsea­son game for the first time since June 16.

He became the first Cub to win his first nine decisions since Kenny Holtzman in 1967 and it is the best start to a season for the franchise since Jim McCormick went 16-0 in 1886.

RED SOX 10, ROCKIES 3: In Boston, Jackie Bradley Jr. extended his major league-best hitting streak to 29 games, Xander Bogaerts homered to extend his hitting streak to 18 games and Boston beat Colorado.

Travis Shaw had three RBIs and Boston moved to a season-best 12 games over .500. The Red Sox have scored eight or more runs 10 times in their last 14 home games.

METS 2, NATIONALS 0: In Washington, Steven Matz pitched a career-high eight innings to win his seventh consecutiv­e start for New York.

Matz (7-1) has a 1.13 ERA over his winning streak, not allowing a run in four of those starts.

DODGERS 3, REDS 1: In Los Angeles, Joc Pederson hit a go-ahead, two-run single with two outs in the fourth inning and Scott Kazmir struck out 12, lifting Los Angeles to a win over Cincinnati.

The Dodgers have won four in a row overall and nine straight against the Reds.

INDIANS 4, WHITE SOX 3: In Chicago, Corey Kluber allowed two runs over 7⅓ innings and Cleveland roughed up a top White Sox pitcher for the second straight day.

After sending Chris Sale to his first loss after a 9-0 start, the Indians got three runs and five hits in six innings against

Jose Quintana (5-4).

RANGERS 15, ANGELS 9: In Arlington, Texas, rookie Nomar Mazara hit the longest home run in the major leagues this season and Texas beat Los Angeles.

Mazara led off the second with a drive into the second deck of the right-field seats that would have traveled 491 feet had it landed unimpeded, according to Major League Baseball’s Statcast program.

BLUE JAYS 8, YANKEES 4: In New York, Russell Martin hit his first two home runs of the season, Michael Saunders also went deep and Toronto finally broke out their big bats again, halting New York’s six-game winning streak.

The defending AL East champions batted .230 and averaged only 3.5 runs over their previous 16 games.

ASTROS 4, ORIOLES 3: In Houston, Evan Gattis hit a two-run homer and Luis Valbuena had a tie-breaking solo shot in the sixth inning that gave Houston a win over Baltimore. BREWERS 3, BRAVES 2, 13 INNINGS: In Atlanta, Jonathan Villar’s run-scoring single in the 13th inning gave Milwaukee a victory over Atlanta. PIRATES 5, DIAMONDBAC­KS 4: In

Pittsburgh, David Freese hit a long tworun home run to cap a four-run fifth inning, Sean Rodriguez also homered and Pittsburgh rallied for a victory over Arizona.

MARLINS 4, RAYS 3: In St. Petersburg, Fla., Cole Gillespie had a late tie-breaking RBI single, Marcell Ozuna drove in two runs and Miami beat Tampa Bay. TWINS 7, ROYALS 5: In Minneapoli­s, Miguel Sano hit the go-ahead two-run home run in the fifth inning after Minnesota lost an early lead, and the Twins staved off another series sweep.

GIANTS 4, PADRES 3 (10): In San Francisco, Brandon Crawford singled in Matt Duffy with two outs in the 10th inning, and surging San Francisco got its 13th win in 14 games.

PHILLIES 8, TIGERS 5: In Detroit, Odubel Herrera and Peter Bourjos homered off Anibal Sanchez, and Philadelph­ia salvaged the finale of a three-game series.

PITCHED AROUND: Struggling Bryce Harper hopes to get some pitches to hit when the Nationals host the Cardinals for a four-game set. Harper sat Wednesday before grounding out as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning in a 2-0 loss to the Mets. The NL MVP has had a tough month, with opponents consistent­ly pitching around him. He’s hitting .197 with two homers in May but also has a .458 on-base percentage thanks to 31 walks.

SHADES OF GRAY: Rockies RHP Jon Gray (1-2, 6.75) tries to get back on track against the Red Sox. The hard-throwing former Isotope (2015) was pitching well until allowing nine runs in 3⅔ innings during a 13-7 loss to the Cardinals in his last outing. Clay Buchholz (2-4, 5.92) will pitch for Boston.
