Vanilla Ace mixes house, disco, new jack swing

- By Adrian Gomez

Scomesam Young is a perfectionist. He’s been that way for years — especially when it

to music. “I’ve been doing this for a long time now,” he says during a recent phone interview from London. “At this point in my career, I’m making music that I like and challenging myself with each track.” Young is known by his stage name, Vanilla Ace. For over a decade, Young has been a strong presence in the electronic dance music world.

He is known for fusing house music, disco and new jack swing.

And his latest track, “The Gee” is currently holding at No. 8 on Beatport’s chart for August.

“Lately I’ve had a lot of releases out,” he says. “They all seem to be doing pretty well with the listeners and on the charts. It’s still very cool to see a track that I’ve created being shared with the world.”

Young says tries to work on music during the week before his weekend shows.

“I try to treat it like a job,” he says. “I try to work on music every afternoon. Then I take the evenings off and begin to prepare for the weekend shows. It’s a schedule that works for me pretty well now.”

Young grew up listening to new jack swing in the late ’80s and 1990s. It’s within this genre that he pulls many of ideas from. “I enjoy finding obscure tracks in this genre,” he says. “I’ll incorporate one of the beats into my song. It’s amazing to see people actually recognize what I’m doing.”
