SPORTS SPEAK UP!

- — North Valley Wally sportsspeakup@abqjournal.com

IT LOOKS LIKE Bob Davie didn’t get an altar boy when he recruited Teriyon Gipson to play football at UNM. However, eight warrants is kind of shocking even by New Mexico standards.

I WAS READING the story today about fantasy football and the ratings for each position. I wonder why you call every NFL team by its mascot (Cowboys, Bears, Rams, etc.) EXCEPT the Washington Redskins. You just print “Washington”, not Redskins. Are you so politically correct that it bleeds into sports? Come on, the Redskins are the REDSKINS, not just Washington. Choose a side, either name them all by location or by mascot. Stop the political correctness, already.

— Charles Spurgeon Our partner, Pro Football Weekly, provides the fantasy page, which is published on Thursdays. Journal staffers don’t touch their copy. Neither the Journal nor its news service partners — which include the Associated Press and the Washington Post — have a policy against using the name Redskins. — Randy, Journal

I HAVE BEEN listening to Mike Roberts since I was a kid growing up with Lobo basketball. That golden voice was the most recognizable thing about the program along with the Pit. It was a pleasure to be able to grow up and develop a friendship with a man who was so much more than a broadcaster. I will never forget his energy and passion for the teams he loved and the individuals who played. Thank you so much Mike. RIP

— Royce Olney (UNM Lobo, 1994-98)

TO RUDY: While you were visiting Ann Arbor, counselor, we loyal Lobo fans were watching our team self destruct in New Jersey on national TV. Sorry, but it was ridiculous. Only one misguided Sports Speak Up! writer stated that UNM football should be dropped. It seems as though you, too, on occasion, have been critical of various UNM teams . ... Please keep the readers posted on the progress for the statue of Mike Roberts. How about one for Bob King, too, with both to be unveiled at the Pit for the upcoming 50th anniversary celebration?

KEN, THANKS for the nice spread on Aggie football. We are readers in LC, and subscribe to and read the Journal in addition to the Sun News!
