TOP PICKS FOR THE WEEK

- BY JACKIE JADRNAK

This weekend is definitely a good time to hang out on Museum Hill, for reasons even beyond the great fall weather, yellowing leaves and fantastic views. Things get started today and Saturday with the Food Sovereignty Symposium from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. both days at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture. The free event, presented in partnership with the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C., takes a look at how area tribes are incorporating more traditional foods into their meals to improve individuals’ health. You can attend in person or follow the sessions on a live Facebook feed. Go to www.miaclab.org for a schedule.

This event leads into Sunday’s Community Day Celebration, when admission to the museums, along with the Santa Fe Botanical Garden, and all events will be free. You will be asked to pay $10 for the matanza prepared by Steve Otero, with pork prepared five different ways, along with sides, beginning at 9:30 a.m. and running through 4 p.m.

A host of other activities will be on tap, including a buffalo dance and community flamenco dance class at 11 a.m.; Native American food sampling, including buffalo roast, from noon-4 p.m.; the Clan Tynker Circus Spectacular from 1-4 p.m.; and much more.

In Taos, The Paseo, a celebration of arts, unreels on the Plaza and downtown streets, with a couple of dozen art installations, performances, projections and so much more. Daytime activities run 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and night projects unfurl from 5 p.m.-10 p.m. Check out the schedule at www.paseotaos.org to get a taste for what is on tap today through Sunday.

MUSIC MASH: What is it about the bands du jour that they’re described as not fitting any genre? Such is the case for Saint Motel, which comes to Meow Wolf Arts Complex, 1352 Rufina Circle, at 8 p.m. Tuesday. This Los Angeles foursome is described as having roots in soul, R&B and funk, but also as experimenting with electronica, jazz and soul. You can come up with your own description if you head out to see them. Tickets are $26, available through www.holdmyticket.com or 505-886-1251.
