RUNNING

THUNDER WINS: Sarah Kiptoo, a Kenyan who trains in Santa Fe, won her first Santa Fe Thunder half-marathon title Sunday after several near misses. She finished in one hour, 15 minutes, 52 seconds to break the tape 52 seconds ahead of Japan’s Rika Takemaka. On the men’s side, Kenyan Eliud Ngetich finished in 1:03.19, outpacing defending champion and countryman Nelson Oyugi, who is the course record-holder.

FOOTBALL

LOBOS PRIDE: For defending Class 2A football champion Escalante High School, size is a relative thing. The Lobos (4-0) added another pelt from a bigger school Friday, whipping 4A’s Pojoaque Valley 38-14 behind quarterback Tristan Martinez and running back Diego Aguilar, who each topped 100 yards rushing. Escalante, winners of three state titles in the past four years, continues its slate of bigger schools when it faces Albuquerque Academy at 7 tonight at home.

BOXING: Santa Fe’s Brandon Holmes could get a little national exposure Tuesday when he steps into the ring at the Buffalo Thunder Resort & Casino as part of the Fox Sports 1’s “Toe to Toe Tuesdays.” The seven-bout card also will feature Española’s Antonio Martinez and Aaron Martinez of Santo Domingo. Holmes, facing Gene Perez of Belen, is the top bout of the undercard and just may get an appearance on TV if things fall right. The fights begin at 6 p.m. Call 699-2845 or 795-2772 for more information.

DISC GOLF: The fifth annual Drew Judycki Memorial Disc Golf Tournament is set for Saturday and Sunday at the Red River Ski & Summer Area. The tournament, the fourth stop on the Tour of the Enchanted Circle, features two 21-hole rounds. For more information, see redriverskiare.com.
