TWANG TO WORLD BEAT

Country star makes comeback; global sounds come to ABQ

- ADRIAN GOMEZ

Elizabeth Cook is all about entertainment.

Whether she’s on stage performing her songs or hosting her radio program, “Apron Strings,” on Sirius XM, she’s putting all of her effort into it.

“I try to be entertaining,” she says. “Sometimes I have to be honest in my thoughts, and it’s the most entertaining.”

After a six-year hiatus, Cook is back with an album, “Exodus of Venus.”

The album was written after many personal tragedies.

“It’s nice to be out performing again,” Cook says. “There’s a new fire inside me, and I’m putting all of my focus on myself and music.”

Cook will perform a show at Skylight in Santa Fe on Saturday, Sept. 24, where she will perform a good portion of the new album. To read more, see Page 26.

Once a year in Albuquerque, musicians from across the globe bring their music to showcase different cultures of the world. And that event, ¡Globalquerque!, begins today at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. One of the bands performing will be Fémina, from Buenos Aires, Argentina. To read more on the festival and the band, see Pages 16-17.

And in nearly a week, the fifth annual Santa Fe Fashion Week will begin. The event has grown and is bringing in some “Project Runway” alums to show. To read more, see Page 20.

Be sure to delve inside this week’s issue, as there are stories on subjects ranging from ZZ Top to The Crookes. And don’t forget “Disney on Ice” is coming to Rio Rancho for five shows.

On Page 4, is the review for “The Magnificent Seven,” which was filmed in New Mexico.
