¡Globalquerque! brings music from around the planet to ABQ
Temperate weather. The smell of roasting green chile. It can only mean one thing — it’s time for ¡Globalquerque!
The event is New Mexico’s annual celebration of world music and culture, and it will descend on the National Hispanic Cultural Center campus beginning today.
Native American, Latin, Afro-pop, island sounds, brass band, Middle Eastern sounds will rock New Mexico for the 12th year, with acts from Argentina to Mongolia to Zimbabwe.
Confirmed acts include the celebrated and unique Mongolian music masters Anda Union; Argentina’s rising stars Fémina; Native American hip-hop artist Supaman (Apsáalooke Nation); the creatively raucous Austrian brass band Federspiel; Tanzania’s legendary Rajab Suleiman, along with his multigenerational group, Kithara; Brazilian diva Dona Onete; Zimbabwe’s powerful, funky, fun Mokoomba; Colombia’s Pacific coast Afro-Colombian Herencia de Timbiquí; the vibrant, awardwinning Maya Kamaty from La Reunion Island; Vietnam’s thoroughly mesmerizing dan tranh player Vân-Ánh Võ; and the dance-ready Mexican indie rock band Orchestra Mendoza.
And songwriter Jill Sobule was recently added to the schedule.
According to organizers, there will be three stages — the charming Fountain Courtyard, the expansive Plaza Mayor and the Albuquerque Journal Theatre.
In addition to the evening performances, each year ¡Globalquerque! presents the popular Free Daytime Global Fiesta on Saturday, Sept. 24.
Among the fun and educational activities, are family-focused workshops with visiting performers, talks and presentations, international dance lessons and film.
The popular Global Village of Craft, Culture & Cuisine, replete with booths featuring artwork, artisan crafts and gourmet international cuisine, is open throughout the festival.
