Wolverines overtake Irish by percentage

Houston coach Tom Herman says he is annoyed about reports that he has been contacted for the LSU job and insists the chatter does not affect his sixth-ranked team.

“It’s really a non-issue,” Herman said Monday. “We are so very open and honest in our program that if it was I would know about it. It’s not an issue because our guys have been educated to know that whatever they need to hear about me is going to come from me and it’s going to be the truth.”

Herman has become a hot commodity for coaching vacancies after leading the Cougars to a 13-1 record and a win over Florida State in the Peach Bowl in his first season before helping Houston to a 4-0 start this year.

On Sunday, Herman talked to reporters after practice and refuted a report that said his agent had been contacted by LSU after coach Les Miles was fired this weekend.

“You know my stance,” he told reporters. “I’m never going to comment about another job during the season. It’s not fair to our players. It’s not fair to whatever university these reports are about. It’s not fair to anybody.”

He said on Monday that he wasn’t going to waste more time and energy talking about false reports regarding his future.

“Me ranting and raving about it’s not going to change it,” he said. “I still think irresponsible journalism is more and more prevalent than it ever has been and it stinks because it affects people’s lives and livelihood and there’s no recourse or repercussions … instead of me ranting and raving, I have to spend my energy focused on a lot more productive things because I’m not going to change it. I don’t know what will or if it ever will.”

MICHIGAN: Michigan has long been the all-time leader in wins. Now, in a statistic first reported by the Detroit Free Press, the Wolverines have taken over Notre Dame’s spot as the program with the best winning percentage.

The Wolverines’ 4-0 start gives them a 929-331-36 record. That’s a win percentage of .7307.

Notre Dame, at 1-3, is 893316-42 — a win percentage of .7306.

… Coach Jim Harbaugh says starting cornerback Jeremy Clark suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament against Penn State and is likely done for the season.

Clark, a fifth-year senior, made 10 tackles and is tied for team-high honors with three pass breakups for the fourthranked Wolverines.

RUTGERS: Offensive catalyst Janarion Grant and defensive end Quanzell Lambert suffered season-ending injuries during Saturday’s loss to Iowa.

Grant had a hand in six touchdowns this season. The wide receiver ran for three, scored on punt and kickoff returns, and threw a touchdown. He had eight career returns for touchdowns.

In a 37-28 win over New Mexico, Grant threw for a touchdown and had a go-ahead 69-yard punt return for another score

Coach Chris Ash confirmed Monday that both seniors won’t play again without disclosing their injuries.

FLORIDA: Quarterback Luke Del Rio is “highly doubtful” to play Saturday at Vanderbilt.

Coach Jim McElwain won’t rule Del Rio out against the Commodores (2-2, 0-1 Southeastern Conference), saying “I’m still not going to count him out.”

MISSOURI STATE: Suspended Missouri State quarterback Breck Ruddick is defending himself against animal abuse allegations.

His attorney, Adam Woody, released a statement Monday that said it is “nothing short of shameful to see the public react to him so viciously.” The statement says Ruddick has

received death threats after an unidentified woman alleged in a Facebook post that Ruddick beat her friend’s dog. The statement also says the Facebook post contains “numerous inaccuracies.”

NEBRASKA: A Nebraska football player who along with two teammates kneeled during the national anthem before the game at Northwestern on Saturday night said he and his family have received racially charged blowback for his protest.

Senior linebacker Michael Rose-Ivey says the response reinforces his point that racial injustice is a major problem in the country.

Rose-Ivey read an impassioned statement about the anthem protest during the Cornhuskers’ weekly media availability on Monday.

TEXAS: Texas coach Charlie Strong has suspended senior guard Kent Perkins for Saturday’s game at Oklahoma State following his arrest last week for allegedly driving while intoxicated.
