La Cueva girls post another shutout, 2-0 over Sandia

Eldorado, La Cueva, AHS boys also win

La Cueva’s girls soccer team got goals from Jackie Stinett and Karlee Maes as the Bears (10-1) blanked second-place Sandia 2-0 in a District 2-6A match at the APS Soccer Complex.

Kat Robinson made three saves in net for La Cueva, which improved to 3-0 in district. Sandia fell to 1-1-1.

It was the ninth straight victory and sixth shutout of the season for the Bears, who have surrendere­d just five goals this season. La Cueva has another key district match Saturday against Eldorado (1-0-1).

In District 5-1A/4A, Sandia Prep shut out visiting Bosque School 2-0 and took over first place in that league. Calista Cordero and Madie Trainor had goals for Prep (11-1, 2-0), which outshot the Bobcats (6-7-1, 2-1) by a 22-4 margin.

The Sundevils have won 10 straight, including the last seven by shutout.

Also Tuesday, St. Pius rolled Los Lunas 7-0 in District 5-5A as Tatiana Limon scored four goals for the Sartans. Esperanza Chavez added two goals for St. Pius (8-4-1, 3-0).

Hope Christian (10-2, 2-0) routed Ruidoso 5-0 in District 4-1A/4A. Brenna McGuirk tallied twice for the Huskies. Bella Starkweath­er had a goal and two assists.

BOYS: Eldorado and La Cueva picked up victories in District 2-6A on Tuesday.

The Eagles (5-5-1, 2-1 in district) doubled Manzano 4-2, while the Bears (10-2, 3-0) downed metro champion Sandia (7-2-2, 1-2) by a 3-1 count.

Mike Sprauer’s goal in the 75th minute for Eldorado broke a 2-2 tie in its victory. David Hernandez had both goals for the Monarchs.

For La Cueva, the Bears scored all their goals in the final 14 minutes; Andres Zanios’ tally in the 66th minute broke a 1-1 tie.

The Bears face Eldorado on Saturday. Clovis is also 3-0 in district, and its next two games are against Sandia (Saturday) and La Cueva (Tuesday in Clovis).

Also Tuesday, Albuquerqu­e High downed West Mesa 6-2 in District 4-6A, led by Carlos Gutierrez’s first-half hat trick. The Bulldogs are 7-2-2 overall and 2-1 in district.
