WOW LOBO FOOTBALL

-

fans you have a game you can win. Get out the grits and (chitlins) and go support Billie Joe Jim bob and the boys. If not, Rudy C attorney will cry all week on sports talk radio. Beat the worst team in the MWC. — Mo Albuquerque

ARNOLD PALMER’S

connection to New Mexico came long before most people knew of him. In 1950, he played in the NCAA Golf Championship at the UNM North course when it was still an 18-hole course. Watching the coverage of his passing Sunday night, many said he gave them two pieces of advice: 1.) Don’t walk the course with your head down but rather engage with the gallery. 2.) Sign an autograph slowly so the name can be read. A panelist estimated that Palmer signed 2 million autographs during his lifetime. — N.M. Old Timer Palmer not only played for Wake Forest in 1950, but he was the stroke play medalist, shooting a two-day 138 to capture his second consecutive individual title. Wake Forest finished fifth at that year’s championships. — Randy, Journal

WHILE WE

attended the 1981 Legends of Golf proam, my son, 1½ years old, dropped a cup of ice as Arnold Palmer was putting. On the way to the next tee, he gave my son a big smile and said “How are you doing son?” My wife apologized and he replied, “Don’t worry about it. It didn’t bother me a bit and if I can’t handle small things like that I don’t belong out here.” I relayed this story (to him for) the “Arnie and Me” Golf Channel special and received a very nice reply thanking me. — Jim

CHARLES SPURGEON:

The word “redskin” IS a racial slur. … I applauded the ABQ Journal for not using the only racial slur you can still say in the workplace and not get fired for saying it until I learned that the Journal has no policy against it. That disappoints me. I offer a litmus test, call a Native man a “redskin” to his face. And don’t refer to the polls claiming support for this slur as any Tom, Dick, Harry, Tonto or Iron Eyes Cody can claim to be Native in order to skew the results — tarheelbill

(REGARDING BOB)

Frank’s announcement that he is leaving the presidency of the university: Some Lobo fans will remember him for extending the contract of Paul Krebs (who makes almost as much as him), approving the WisePies naming rights (will they make that $600K deadline?) and attempting to cut the size of the MWC basketball tournaments (adverse reaction forced him to overturn it). Moving to a newly created position at $350K(so much for UNM’s tight budget and hiring freeze), life is good for some in Lobo Land. — Lobo Rank and File

I WAS ABSOLUTELY

dismayed over Vice President for UNM Finance/ Administration David Harris’ arrogance and lack of transparency when questioned by KOB’s Jen French regarding the excessive spending by the Athletic Department for dinners when courting donors. Harris’ lack of accountability by refusing to answer French’s questions and walking away midway through the interview ... (made) both the Athletic and Finance/Administration departments look worse than bad. … — Bob, UNM Area

THE NEW MEXICO

Activities Association cut its own throat in the hiring of umps and refs several years ago when it refused to honor the English-only clause in their rulebook. Game officials take enough crap from players and coaches without having to get it in languages, usually Spanish, they’re not fluent in, but NMAA declared “no mas” to implementation of the rule when it was put into play in a high school baseball contest . ... A good number of ref prospects just don’t think it’s worth the hassle. — RobScott
