Showdowns highlight the coming week
Tuesday features 6A state final rematch of Atrisco boys vs. AHS
The start of the upcoming week in prep soccer ought to prove eventful, starting with four premier matchups Tuesday — La Cueva’s boys at Clovis, Atrisco Heritage’s boys at Albuquerque High in a rematch of their state championship game from last November, Albuquerque Academy’s boys at Los Alamos, and the Hope Christian girls at Sandia Prep.
BOYS: Volcano Vista (3-0 in District 1-6A) had victories over Cibola (4-2) and Piedra Vista (4-0) last week. Second-place Cleveland (1-1) takes on Volcano Vista next Thursday and Rio Rancho on Saturday.
Cibola (2-2) dropped two, to the Hawks and then on Saturday, a 2-0 setback to Rio Rancho (1-2), which was a crucial result for the Rams.
La Cueva earned a dramatic 2-1, double-overtime win Saturday over Eldorado in District 2-6A, just ahead of the Bears’ trip to Clovis (3-1) on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Eagles and Sandia are tied for third place at 2-2. The Matadors beat Clovis 3-1 on Saturday after losing 3-1 on Tuesday to La Cueva.
Atrisco Heritage, at 5-0, leads Valley and Albuquerque High, who both are 3-1 in District 4-6A. The Jaguars, after the AHS rematch Tuesday, face Valley on Friday.
Early co-leaders in 2-5A are Albuquerque Academy and Los Alamos, both 1-0. In 5-5A, Los Lunas and Valencia lead at 2-0, and square off Tuesday at Los Lunas. St. Pius (2-1) is a close third.
Hope Christian (3-0-1) and Portales (2-0-1) are in a virtual tie for first in District 4-1A/4A. Bosque School’s 2-0 win on Tuesday over Sandia Prep has the Bobcats (3-0-1) in charge in District 5-1A/4A.
GIRLS: Cleveland (2-0) leads 1-6A, but faces tough league games next week against Cibola (1-1-1) and Volcano Vista (0-1-1). Rio Rancho is 1-1 after a 2-1, double-OT victory Saturday over the Cougars.
In 2-6A, La Cueva and Eldorado drew 1-1 on Saturday; the Bears lead the district at 3-0-1, with the Eagles in second place at 2-0-2. Sandia (2-1-1) is third after 2-0 loss to La Cueva earlier this week.
AHS is cruising along in 4-6A, at 4-0. Rio Grande and Valley (both 2-1-1) share second place. The surprising Ravens, who are 7-4-1 overall, are the only team to have played the Bulldogs close in league play, losing 3-1.
St. Pius has already played its four rivals in District 5-5A, and beaten them by a combined 33-0. For what that is worth. As with the boys in 2-5A, Academy and Los Alamos lead that district, and meet Tuesday up north.
Bosque (3-1) is chasing Sandia Prep (2-0) in 5-1A/4A after the Sundevils’ 2-0 victory on Tuesday. The Huskies are 3-0 in District 4 and blasted second-place Moriarty 10-0 on Saturday.
