Where evil lurks within the walls

- BY KATHALEEN ROBERTS ASSISTANT ARTS EDITOR

Unexplained disappearances and rumors plagued Maggie Forrester’s Home for Girls for 50 years. The zombies have vanished, but something evil lurks within its walls.

Blackout Theatre will present its fourth annual “Quarantine: The Curse” immersive haunted house at EXPO New Mexico inside the Youth Hall Dorms beginning Friday, Oct. 7 and running through Oct. 31. This show places the audience in the story.

You are invited to the founder’s evening memorial service and dedication before the home re-opens.

Unlike past Quarantines, this year’s can accommodate 50 visitors at once to slash waiting times, Blackout’s Barney Lopez said. Guests will be able to buy tickets for specific time slots. The shows will last 30 minutes, with a new one opening every 40 minutes.

Call it environmental theater with an horrific twist.

“There’s lots of rumors of people disappearing at the home and seeing odd things at the home,” Lopez said.

Each visitor will be assigned a relationship to Maggie to give them a role in her life.

“There are ghosts and demons haunting the place,” Lopez said. “I don’t want to give away any of the scares.”

About 30 actors will participate, Lopez said. Company members have been working on the story line since August.

“We’ve made our own mini-haunted houses and tried to scare each other.”
