TOP PICKS FOR THE WEEK

- BY JACKIE JADRNAK

The antidote to the droning holiday music being piped into retail outlets is to relax and enjoy live performances of the music of the season. Perhaps the best chance for that will be 7:30 p.m. Monday when The King’s Singers, a vocal sextet from King’s College in Cambridge (yes, that’s England, not Massachusetts), brings a program with Frosty, Santa and Rudolph, along with a generous sampling of the more reverent carols. They will perform in the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi in downtown Santa Fe. Tickets are $20-$75, available from PerformanceSantaFe.org or TicketsSantaFe.org.

The cathedral also will host the Santa Fe Symphony Chorus and the Santa Fe Women’s Ensemble, accompanied by the Symphony Brass, piano and the cathedral organ at 7 p.m. today with “Carols & Choruses.” Admission is free and doors open at 6:15 p.m. for this popular event.

And don’t forget the “Mariachi Christmas” family event, which benefits the National Latino Behavioral Health Association fund scholarships for New Mexico college students. It gets rolling at 6 tonight at the Lensic Performing Arts Center, 211 W. San Francisco St. Tickets are $25-$50 and can be gotten at the Lensic Box Office, 988-1234.

TRASH ART:

You can shop both local and green 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday at the Recycle Santa Fe Art Festival, which offers one-of-akind items made from recycled materials from more than 100 artists. Well, a lot of them are local, but some come trucking in from other parts of the country. Admission to the show at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center, 201 W. Marcy St., is free those days but, if you pay $5, you can get first shot at the goods from 5-9 tonight.

Also, the ever-popular Trash Fashion and Costume Contest is 7 p.m. tonight; tickets for $15-$20 are available through the Lensic Box Office.

DOME CONCERT:

The Digital Dome at the Institute of American Indian Arts increasingly is offering performance in its space. At 7 tonight, Scatter Their Own, an “Alter-Native rock duo” made up of Scotti Clifford (guitarist/vocalist) and Juliana Brown Eyes-Clifford (bassist/vocalist) will ply their tunes. The singers, with Oglala Lakota ancestry from the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota, performed in March at the SXSW Music Festival in Austin and are working on their second independent album. Tickets are $10-$20, also available through the Lensic Box Office.

“TWELFTH NIGHT”:

If theater is more to your taste, you have two more chances to see performances of Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” at the Greer Garson Theatre, Santa Fe University of Art and Design. You can get tickets, $5-$15, at the door or in advance through the Lensic Box Office for the show at 7 p.m. today and Saturday.
