Recapping the last week in prep basketball for boys and girls teams in Rio West:

BOYS: After a long layoff, Cleveland, now at full strength after gaining some football players, was playing host to last year’s Class 6A state runner-up, Carlsbad, on Friday night. The Storm (2-0) has been off since Nov. 22. Cleveland also plays host to Clovis tonight. Cibola is one of two Rio West boys teams in Las Cruces this weekend. The Cougars, who fell 66-55 to Hope Christian on Tuesday, are taking on Mayfield and Centennial during this trip.

Rio Rancho is 2-2, but dropped games this week at Albuquerqu­e High and at home to Eldorado, 104-98 on Thursday night. The Rams put up 100 points themselves last Saturday in a 100-74 win over visiting Clovis.

Valley (0-2) is in Las Cruces for games with Centennial and Mayfield. The Vikings were beaten earlier this week by Del Norte.

Volcano Vista (0-1 and off for the last 10 days) returned to the court for home games this weekend against Oñate (Friday) and Las Cruces High (today).

West Mesa dropped to 0-2, losing to Del Norte on Wednesday night. The Mustangs face Albuquerqu­e Academy today.

St. Pius opened Tuesday with a resounding 73-33 victory over Sandia Prep. The Sartans were facing Alamogordo late Friday night.

Bernalillo opened its season last weekend in the post-Thanksgivi­ng tournament. The Spartans beat Socorro in the first game, but lost the next night, 76-47, to Alamogordo. Bernalillo was playing host to Del Norte late Friday.

Bosque School is off to a very tough 0-6 start. The Bobcats fell twice this week, to St. Michael’s and Coronado. Friday, Bosque fell to Maxwell at the Menaul tournament.

GIRLS: Volcano Vista’s girls are home this weekend to face Oñate and Las Cruces. The defending state champion Hawks (2-0) beat Los Alamos on Tuesday. Volcano Vista has an interestin­g nondistric­t road game Tuesday at West Mesa.

The Mustangs (2-1) beat Rio Rancho earlier this week, but lost 62-57 on Thursday to Hope Christian. West Mesa faced Los Lunas late Friday.

Cleveland (2-1) is competing this week at the Gallup Invitation­al. The Storm defeated Winslow, Ariz., on Thursday, and met Carlsbad on Friday in the semifinals.

Cibola was traveling to Mayfield (Friday) and Centennial (today); the Cougars (1-1) were beaten 61-50 by Hope Christian on Tuesday night.

Rio Rancho has lost its first three games, although the Rams’ schedule has been very tough to open the season. This week, Rio Rancho suffered setbacks to the Mustangs and Eldorado.

Valley (0-2) lost a road game Wednesday at Los Lunas; the Vikings, like Cibola, are down south this weekend, at Centennial and Mayfield.

Bosque School (1-2) was facing Coronado late Friday at the Menaul tournament.

Bernalillo (0-4) was taking on Del Norte late Friday. The Spartans lost both games in their Thanksgivi­ng event, to Socorro and Taos, and also were beaten Wednesday by Pojoaque Valley.
