SPORTS SPEAK UP!

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE UNM football team on consecutive NM Bowl appearances. Quite the accomplishment, it’s not like any ol’ average team can go to a bowl game. Oh wait. — MarkSD

NON-BASKETBALL

Pit memory: Albuquerque’s light heavyweight champion boxer Bobby Foster fighting in the arena in 1973 and ’74 toward the end of his career. $10 admission. Worth every penny … called by some the hardest puncher pound-for-pound in boxing history. — Joseph

DOESN’T KREBS

and the Athletic Department get it that attendance is down because the Men’s basketball program needs a coach who knows what to do with the talent. It’s not ticket prices, it’s Noodles! — Swami TO JC, SOCAL:

We won’t bother to wake you when it’s over (UNM/UTSA). As George C. Scott as Patton said to a young soldier complaining about his sleep being disturbed: Get back down there son, you’re the only (expletive) around here who knows what he’s trying to do. I will enjoy the game and hopefully the Lobo victory; you stay home and grouse (and sleep). That’s what yer good at. — Mike K

I HOPE COACH DAVIE

makes a statement by suspending safety Ryan Santos for the 2nd half of the upcoming bowl game. His dirty hit deserves more than a first half banishment. His lack-of-class actions/gestures afterwards were a display of ignorance. — TD

IT’S NO WONDER

that Mountain West Conference football is looked upon with so much disdain in these parts. The Journal (the “flagship newspaper of NM”) rarely, if ever, prints the box score of MWC games that do not involve the Lobos, and the few lines about Saturday night’s conference championship game were buried on page 6. Seems that the MWC only gets noticed when UNM wins a conference championship, otherwise, forget about it. Not a way to build a following. — Joe, ABQ

I AM TIRED

of articles about the missed call for hands to (the face) of Minnesota QB Bradford on the possible game-tying 2 point conversion attempt vs. Dallas. The refs missed the first penalty as the Viking left tackle moved before the snap. Had the refs made that call for false start, the play would have been blown dead and would not have continued . ... If folks are going to continue to call out the refs for missed calls, then all missed calls should be included. — John J. Krapcha, Friend of the Attorney
