UNLV turns away Wyoming

Hutchison’s 3-pointer lifts Broncos to victory

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Jovan Mooring scored 17 points and had seven assists as UNLV fended off Wyoming to earn an 81-75 win on Saturday.

Christian Jones added 15 points and 10 rebounds while Tyrell Green and Jalen Poyser each had 14 points for the Rebels (8-7, 1-1 Mountain West).

UNLV was outshot by Wyoming, 45 percent to 39.1 percent, but held a 24-16 advantage at the free-throw line, hit two more 3-pointers, and won the turnover battle.

Justin James finished with 17 points and Hayden Dalton added 16 to lead the Cowboys (11-4, 1-1).

The Rebels never trailed in the second half but likewise never led by more than seven over the final 10 minutes. James hit a free throw, then put back a layup following his miss on the second attempt to cut it to 73-71 with 33 seconds left. But four free throws by Mooring and Uche Ofoegbu in the final 15 seconds iced it.

BOISE STATE 74, COLORADO

STATE 73: In Boise, Idaho, Chandler Hutchison dribbled the length of the floor, found an open crease at the 3-point line and buried a trey to lift the Broncos (9-4, 2-0) to a dramatic come-from-behind win over the Rams (9-6, 1-1).

Hutchison collected a steal and converted it into a layup with 1:05 left to tie the game at 71, but Colorado State regained the lead on Brandon Koelliker’s fade-away jumper from the top of the key with 5 seconds left.

AIR FORCE 78, UTAH STATE 73: In Air Force Academy, Colo., Jacob Van was 3-for-4 from the free throw line in the final 17 seconds to help the Falcons (8-7, 1-1) hold off the Aggies (6-7, 0-2).

Koby McEwen got Utah State within two with his 3-pointer with 49 seconds left to make it 75-73.

FRESNO STATE 77, NEVADA 76: In Fresno, Calif., Jaron Hopkins made a slam dunk with 35 seconds left, and Paul Watson added two free throws as the Bulldogs (9-5, 1-1) pulled away.

After Hopkins stole the ball and made the go-ahead shot, Nevada’s D.J. Fenner traveled with 13.4 seconds to play.

Marcus Marshall scored 26 points on 10-of-21 shooting and made five 3-pointers to lead Nevada (12-3, 1-1).

Women

BOISE STATE 51, COLORADO

STATE 45: In Fort Collins, Colo., Brooke Pahukoa scored 20 points and Marijke Vanderscha­af contribute­d 11 rebounds as the Broncos (12-1, 2-0) toppled the Rams (9-5, 1-1).

WYOMING 79, UNLV 57: In Laramie, Wyo., the Cowgirls (10-3, 2-0) hit six 3-pointers in each half to beat the Rebels (9-5, 0-2).

UTAH STATE 65, AIR FORCE 62: In Logan, Utah, senior forward Antoina Robinson matched her career-high with 13 points to lead the Aggies (8-5, 1-1) over the Falcons (2-10, 0-2).

FRESNO STATE 71, NEVADA 70: In Reno, Nev., Candice White scored 25 points as the Bulldogs (8-5, 1-1) defeated the Wolf Pack (6-7, 0-2). Terae Briggs’ rebound shot under the basket at the buzzer missed for Nevada.

State Colleges

NMSU 85, WESTERN NM 28: In Las Cruces, the New Mexico State women’s team (8-6) dominated the Mustangs (4-8) as Gia Park scored 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field. Senior guard Jordan Gutierrez scored 11 for WNMU.
