Jaded Heart Band releases two songs on 45-rpm vinyl

- BY DAVID STEINBERG

Roger Jamesonand the Jaded Heart Band are doing things a little differently for its new project.

They’re releasing two songs on a 45-rpm recording on vinyl instead of the usual dozen cuts on a CD.

“I always wanted to try something on vinyl. I wanted to see how it would go over. It seems to have gotten a lot of attention,” said Jameson, the Albuquerque folk-rock band’s leader and composer.

Side A has the song “Big Black Bird,” and Side B is “Drive-In Picture Show.”

The tunes will be performed at the band’s two forthcoming shows. One is Friday, Jan. 6, at County Line, and the other is Jan. 21, at the Blue Grasshopper.

“As a songwriter, I want to put songs out that told a story,” Jameson said. “The song ‘Big Black Bird’ is about a guy looking for a way back home. It takes place in a lonely motel room. It’s also about loneliness and finding yourself. Hopefully, it has a universal feeling about getting back where you need to be.”

It features the band’s violist, Alicia Ultan.

Jameson wrote the song about

five years ago in Phoenix and had originally planned to use it on an album that he put out in 2009 called “Antique Daisies and a Late Summer Parade.” He decided against that because it was a bit longer.

The B-side of the vinyl, “Drive-In Picture Show,” was composed about a year ago.

Jameson described it as “an upbeat, fun rock ’n’ roll song” that features Dave Williams, who plays saxophone and keyboards.

Jameson plays guitar and harmonica and is the lead vocalist. Other band members are bass guitarist Mike Fox and drummer-guitarist Rick Crouse.

For those who can’t play vinyl, the 45 comes with a download card from cdbaby.com, Jameson said.
