Buran Theatre marks 10 years since its birth at University of Kansas
Alot can happen in 10 years. And it can pass quickly. This is what Adam R. Burnett is experiencing as Buran Theatre celebrates its first decade of existence.
“What’s great about this company is that it’s grown in an organic way,” he says. “That’s been one of the best things for our growth.”
Founded at the University of Kansas in 2007, Buran Theatre expanded to a network of satellite cities in 2008, and further expanded in 2009 with the inclusion of Albuquerque.
The satellite cities now include New York City, Los Angeles, Albuquerque and Kansas City, Kan.
Burnett ill kick off its season with “Some Are Isthmuses: A Decade of Buran Theatre” on Jan. 13-14.
The dual evening celebration will feature an artisan dinner, prepared by Buran Theatre’s artistic director/chef Adam R. Burnett, and a retrospective of theater productions from the past decade and newly devised material responding to current affairs.
“We usually focus on one big project a year,” he says. “In the coming weeks, the company members will meet in Albuquerque and develop the a new piece. It’s going to be a lot of work to get this off the ground in less than two weeks.”
“Some Are Isthmuses” will feature local company members Burnett, Donna Jewell, Marya Jones, Elsa Menendez, Casey Mraz, and lisa nevada, alongside company members from New York, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Kansas City and Lawrence, Kan.
The Jan. 13 retrospective performance will feature a collage of past works, including selections from 2009’s “Money Buckets!,” 2010’s “The”House of Fitzcarraldo,” 2013’s “Nightmares: A Demonstration of the Sublime,” 2014’s “Magic Bullets,” 2015’s “Mammoth” and 2016’s “Poshlost Saudades!”
The Jan. 14 performance will feature devised material created in the days before the performance responding to the most current affairs.
Proceeds from the event will support Buran Theatre’s 2017 season and the premiere of a new work in Albuquerque in 2018.
Tickets are $32 for each evening or $50 for both, which includes dinner and the performance. Non-dinner tickets are $18. The Jan. 13 menu includes a vegetarian bánh mi Cuban sandwich served with sweet potato fries, and the Jan. 14 menu includes vegetarian green chile stew served with artisan pasta salad.
