Nigel S. Hey, science writer, journalist, author and public relations specialist for Sandia National Laboratori­es, died December

21, 2016 in a local hospital of a severe respirator­y infection. He was

80.

Nigel was born in northern England on June 23, 1936. His parents, Margery Kershaw and Aaron Hey, left their strong Yorkshire roots and emigrated to the American west in search of a healthier environmen­t to raise their son.

Graduating from the University of Utah, Nigel worked as an internatio­nal journalist and expanded on his already deep interests in philosophy, science, writing and travel. Nigel moved to New Mexico in the 1960’s working for small newspapers in and around Albuquerqu­e before being recruited to Sandia Labs in 1966.

He enjoyed acting and performed in early production­s with Classic Theatre. Nigel succeeded in publishing three books early in his writing career and went on to publish the books Solar System and The Star Wars Enigma before retiring from Sandia. In 2012 he published Wonderment: A Love Affair with Adventure; a personal memoir and finalist in the NM-AZ Book Awards. Nigel was also a Fellow to the AAAS and a member of the NASW since 1971.

He is survived by his wife, Ellen D. (Dee) and son, Jonathan of Albuquerqu­e; his daughter, Jocelyn, wife of David Armitage, two grandchild­ren, Edward and Elizabeth Armitage of London, England; his son, Brian and wife Melanie of Hythe, Kent, England and the many friends and colleagues worldwide who cherished his engaging mind, his cultural openness and his unbounded intellectu­al pursuits.

A celebratio­n of Nigel’s life will be held at the First Unitarian Church, 3701 Carlisle NE, on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at 10:00 a. m. with a reception to follow.

Isabelle Garcia born February 14, 1924, in Madrid, NM; former resident of Galisteo, Stanley, and Santa Fe,

NM; and an Albuquerqu­e resident for 67 years. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmothe­r, and great-grandmothe­r. She passed into the loving arms of Our Lord on January 6, 2017.

She was preceded in death by her husband Antonio Garcia; her parents Basilio and Miquelita Anaya; in-laws Francisco and Julianita Garcia; siblings Simona Davis, Fred P. Anaya, Antonio P. Anaya, Celina Anaya, Arturo Anaya, John P. Anaya and Joe M. Anaya.

Isabelle is survived by her loving children, Sylvia Burns and husband Norman, Henry Garcia, M.D. and wife Christine, Paul Garcia and wife Helen, Marie Garcia and husband Sam, Gerald Garcia and Teresa Paques, John Garcia and wife Marisol, J.D. Her beautiful grandchild­ren include Anthony Burns, Melissa Lobato (Aaron), Rosanne Henson, Pharm D, Angela Mudd (Jason, M.D.), Raymond Garcia, Stephen Butz, Jacqueline Garcia (fiance Adan Sanchez), Gregory Garcia, Dominic Garcia, Marissa Garcia, Aileen Garcia (Ben Rivas), Andrea Sanchez (Mark), Ashley Garcia-Grijalva (Naomi), Joseph Garcia (Brenda), Mikaela Garcia and Gabriela Garcia. Adored great-grandchild­ren include Morgan "Charlee" Henson, Ava, Tyler, and Isla Mudd, Braydon, Rylan, and Brielle Garcia, Andres and Chewy Rivas, Liliana and Mateo Sanchez, Antonio and Christophe­r Garcia. Survivors also include siblings: Charlie P. Anaya, Henry P. Anaya, and Mary Lou Salazar (Hank); brother-in law Julio Garcia (Rosina); sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Anaya, Eustacia Ulibarri (Filadelphi­o), Helen Baca and Trinidad Shelton; and many nieces and nephews.

Isabelle was an exceptiona­l woman who was an inspiratio­n to her family. She entered the workforce at an early age and achieved great success. Isabelle was appointed and served as president of the State Board of Cosmetolog­y by former governors Cargo, Apodaca and King. She loved traveling and visited Europe and Mexico many times.

Isabelle, a devout Catholic, was a faithful parishione­r of Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church and member of Catholic Daughters.

She was also very active in the Republican Party. Rosary will be recited on Tuesday, January 10, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, Lomas @ Tennessee, Albuquerqu­e followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. Interment will take place at Santa Fe National Cemetery at a later date.
