Joan R. Herman, age 92, passed away on Tuesday, December 27. 2016 in San Antonio, TX. She was born in Omaha, NE to parents Frank and Josephine (Dvorak) Mokry. Joan was the last of seven children from a family that emigrated to the United States due to the Austrian Crimean war. Joan worked for the Army Signal Corps with the War Department as a teletype operator at Fort Snelling, MN and later moved to Los Angeles where she met the love of her life, Bob, and faithfully followed him everywhere his Air Force career took him. No matter how long or short the assignment, Joan always made their house a home. After Bob’s retirement in 1976, they settled in Albuquerqu­e, NM. Joan was a devoted parishione­r of the Our Lady of the Annunciati­on Catholic Church, where she sang in the choir and served as a Maronite. Joan volunteere­d many hours to the Right to Life of New Mexico, loved to play golf and bridge and thoroughly appreciate­d the companions­hip of her dogs.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 57 years, Col. Robert L. Herman, (Ret.).

Joan is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law; Rita Tonner (William), Marguerite A. Herman (George E. Powers, Jr.) and Maud Thorp (Kevin); eight grandchild­ren and five great-grandchild­ren. A Memorial Mass will be held at the Our Lady of the Annunciati­on Catholic Church, 2621 Vermont St. NE, Albuquerqu­e, Spring 2017. Inurnment will take place at the Santa Fe National Cemetery with her husband. In lieu of flowers, contributi­ons may be made in Joan’s name to Right to Life, 2413 Wyoming Blvd NE, # A, Albuquerqu­e, NM, 87112.
