Ball, Alford stand out as Bruins go to 10-0 at Pauley

LOS ANGELES — Lonzo Ball scored 21 points and No. 4 UCLA led all the way in beating Stanford 89-75 on Sunday night.

La Cueva grad Bryce Alford added 17 points and TJ Leaf had 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Bruins (16-1, 3-1 Pac-12), who improved to 10-0 at Pauley Pavilion. They hit 11 3-pointers, led by Ball and Alford with four apiece.

“The good thing is we’ve seen ourselves get better in a lot of areas from the start of the season to now,” Alford said.

“The way we start games has been a lot better. It’s a long season, it’s a grind. We’re not going to be perfect in January. That’s not the goal.”

Michael Humphrey had a career-high 27 points and 14 rebounds before fouling out in the last two minutes for Stanford (8-8, 0-4) in his first double-double of the season.

The Bruins dominated the first half, shooting 53 percent on their way to a 48-30 lead at the break. They made eight 3-pointers in the half, with Ball hitting two in a row and Leaf following with another 1½ minutes into the game.

Stanford shot better in the second half when it outscored UCLA 45-41. The Cardinal cut its deficit from 20 points to 61-50 on a pair of free throws by Cameron Walker. .

2-2 ACC) used a 10-0 second-half run to pull away from the Demon Deacons (1-6, 1-3), sending them to their 25th consecutiv­e road loss in conference play.

(20) PURDUE 66, (13) WISCONSIN 55: In West Lafayette, Ind., Caleb Swanigan had 18 points and 13 rebounds to help the Boilermake­rs (14-3, 3-1 Big Ten) end the nine-game winning streak by the Badgers (13-3, 2-1).

(14) NORTH CAROLINA 108, N.C. STATE 56: In Chapel Hill, N.C., Justin Jackson scored 21 points and the Tar Heels (14-3, 2-1 ACC) had a 20-0 first-half run and routed the Wolfpack (12-4, 1-2).

CAL 74, (25) SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA 73: In Los Angeles, Ivan Rabb scored 17 points, including the go-ahead free throws with five seconds left, and had a key block at the buzzer to lift the Golden Bears (11-5, 2-2 Pac-12) past the Trojans (15-2, 2-2).

(4) MISSISSIPP­I STATE 74, TENNESSEE 64: In Knoxville, Tenn., Blair Schaefer made a go-ahead 3-pointer with 2:39 left as the Bulldogs (17-0, 3-0 SEC) capitalize­d on superior depth to beat the Lady Vols (10-5, 2-1) in Knoxville for the first time in 16 attempts.

(5) SOUTH CAROLINA 81, FLORIDA 62: In Gainesvill­e, Fla. A’ja Wilson and Alaina Coates each recorded double-doubles as the Gamecocks (13-1, 3-0) beat the Gators (9-6, 0-3) for the eighth straight time.

(6) FLORIDA STATE 69, (13) DUKE 45: In Tallahasse­e, Fla., Shakayla Thomas scored 22 points and Imani Wright added 14 as the Seminoles (15-2, 3-1 ACC) beat the Blue Devils (14-2, 2-1).

The game drew a programrec­ord 6,687 to the Tucker Center.

(7) NOTRE DAME 67, (14) MIAMI 55: In Coral Gables, Fla., Marina Mabrey scored 15 points as the Irish (15-2, 3-1 ACC) beat the Hurricanes(13-3, 2-2). Notre Dame extended a seven-point lead after three periods with an 8-0 run to start the fourth quarter.

(8) LOUISVILLE 73, PITTSBURGH 52: In Louisvile, Ky., Mariya Moore scored 12 of her 18 points in the second half to lead the Cardinals (15-3, 3-1 ACC) over the Panthers (10-6, 1-2).

(23) DEPAUL 96, SETON HALL 65: In South Orange, N.J., Tanita Allen scored a career-high 30 points, Jacqui Grant had her fourth-straight double-double, and both had a career-best five 3-pointers as the Blue Demons (13-4, 5-0) beat the Pirates (8-7, 1-3).
