GM: Time for Beckham to grow up

-

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — New York Giants general manager Jerry Reese told star receiver Odell Beckham Jr. that he needs to look at some of his antics on and off the field and be more responsible.

Beckham has been under the microscope for the past week after taking a one-day trip to Miami with some fellow receivers after the regular-season finale with a wild-card playoff game at Green Bay less than a week ago.

Beckham dropped a career-high three passes in the Giants 38-13 loss to the Packers on Sunday, and more controversy followed: It was alleged that he punched a hole in a wall outside the Giants’ locker room at Lambeau Field.

He was not in the locker room at the Giants’ headquarters Monday to answer questions.

Coach Ben McAdoo said he became aware of the hole Monday, but he did not say who did it, adding he takes responsibility.

Reese said the Giants are investigating any potential vandalism and they would hold the appropriate party responsible for the damage.

He did not identify any suspects, but said he had a heart-to-heart talk Monday with Beckham, who was voted second team All-Pro after catching 101 passes this season for 1,367 yards and 10 touchdowns. JAGUARS: Jacksonville hired Doug Marrone as head coach and brought back Tom Coughlin in an executive role.

ESPN first reported Marrone had been chosen to replace Gus Bradley, who was fired in late November after going 14-48 in three-plus seasons.

The Jaguars (3-13) also gave general manager Dave Caldwell a two-year contract extension, the person said.

Coughlin, who was Jacksonville’s first coach and won two Super Bowls in 12 seasons with the New York Giants, will serve as executive vice president of football operations.

Marrone, who also interviewed with Los Angeles and San Francisco, served as Jacksonville’s interim coach for the final two games. The Jaguars won one and blew a late lead in the season finale at Indianapolis.

PACKERS: Receiver Jordy Nelson will sit out practice at midweek to focus on rehab for his rib injury.

But coach Mike McCarthy says Nelson could play in the Packers’ divisional-round playoff game this weekend in Dallas if he can practice Saturday.

REDSKINS: Washington interviewed Mike Pettine for its defensive coordinator opening. Pettine was most recently the head coach of the Cleveland Browns, fired in January 2016

49ERS: San Francisco interviewed Washington offensive coordinator Sean McVay for the team’s vacant head coaching job.

McVay is the grandson of former Niners executive John McVay, who teamed with coach Bill Walsh to build a dynasty in San Francisco.
