Pirates push back, beat host Cubs

Milwaukee wallops Cincinnati; Nationals top Phillies in 10th

CHICAGO — David Freese and Francisco Cervelli each drove in two runs to back Gerritt Cole as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Chicago Cubs 4-2 on Friday to end a fourgame skid.

The Cubs loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth inning before Tony Watson got Ben Zobrist on a grounder for his third save.

After going 4-14 against the Cubs last year, Pittsburgh started out well against the World Series champions.

Cole (1-1) allowed two runs in six innings, striking out five. He outpitched Kyle Hendricks (1-1), who surrendere­d three runs in 5⅓ innings after allowing just one run during three wins against Pittsburgh last year

BREWERS 10, REDS 4: In Cincinnati, Eric Thames homered for the second straight night and drove in three runs as Milwaukee beat Cincinnati. The Brewers had a season-high 12 hits.

NATIONALS 3, PHILLIES 2 (10): In Washington, Daniel Murphy delivered on a day when his bobblehead­s were given out to fans, doubling home Bryce Harper in the 10th to send Washington over Philadelph­ia. The Phillies lost their fourth in a row.

MARLINS 3, METS 2: In Miami, J.T. Realmuto hit a game-ending RBI double with two out in the ninth inning as Miami snapped New York’s five-game win streak.

New York’s Noah Syndergaar­d allowed two runs, one earned, in six innings, and his ERA soared to 0.95.

YANKEES 4, CARDINALS 3: In New York, Masahiro Tanaka (1-1) worked 6⅓ effective innings and Aroldis Chapman escaped his own jam for his third save in three days as New York beat St. Louis for its fifth straight win.

Chapman allowed a two-out walk to Randal

Grichuk and a double to pinch-hitter Jose Martinez before Dexter Fowler grounded out to second.

ORIOLES 6, BLUE JAYS 4: In Toronto, J.J. Hardy hit a two-run homer for Baltimore, and Chris Davis, Jonathan Schoop and Seth Smith also connected as the Orioles sent Toronto to its seventh straight defeat.

Wade Miley (1-0) pitched six innings for the win, and Zach Britton got three outs for his fifth save in a game in which plate umpire Dale Scott received a concussion after being hit in the mask with a foul tip.

BRAVES 5, PADRES 2: In Atlanta, Ender Inciarte hit the first home run in baseball’s newest stadium and Nick Markakis drove in the first two runs as Atlanta beat San Diego in the regular-season debut for SunTrust Park.

Before a sellout crowd of 41,149 that included former President Jimmy Carter, Commission­er Rob Manfred and one-time home run king Hank Aaron, the Braves won their second straight game after a 1-6 start.

ROYALS 7, ANGELS 1: In Kansas CIty, Mo., Danny Duffy allowed three hits over seven innings and Mike Moustakas hit a two-run homer as Kansas City beat Los Angeles.

Duffy (2-0) gave up a run on a Mike Trout first-inning single, but retired 15 of the last 16 batters he faced. DODGERS 7, DIAMONDBAC­KS 1: In Los Angeles, Clayton Kershaw allowed one run and struck out in eight in 8⅓ innings and Andrew Toles hit a two-run homer to lead Los Angeles to a win over Arizona.

Former Dodger Zack Greinke allowed five runs on 10 hits in five innings for the Diamondbac­ks. GIANTS 8, ROCKIES 2: In San Francisco, Chris Marrero and Brand Crawford each hit a home run and Johnny Cueto pitched seven solid innings as San Francisco beat Colorado.

Former Isotope Stephen Cardullo drove in a run for the Rockies. TIGERS 7, INDIANS 6: In Cleveland, Miguel Cabrera hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning after being brushed back in the first as Detroit beat Cleveland, which has lost six of seven.

The Indians made it close with five runs in the ninth. RAYS 10, RED SOX 5: In Boston, Logan Morrison hit a grand slam and Shane Peterson homered in his first big league at-bat since 2015, two of the career-high four homers allowed by Cy Young Award winner Rick Porcello (1-1) in Tampa Bay’s victory over Boston.

Chris Archer (2-0) gave up one run in 5⅔ innings. TWINS 2, WHITE SOX 1: In Minneapoli­s, Dylan Covey allowed one run on five hits while pitching into the sixth inning of his big league debut, and Matt Davidson hit a solo home run in the seventh to lift Chicago past Minnesota.
