Oberst, Virginia Anthony

-

Virginia Anthony Oberst Nee Powell was born in Omaha, Nebraska, February 15, 1920, passed peacefully at the age of 97 April 14, 2017.

Virginia was always proud to be an American and very patriotic. She was a proud past member of Daughters of the American Revolution and Eastern Star. Virginia loved working in the private aviation sector and enjoyed sharing many funny stories. After being diagnosed as legally blind, she was instrumental in organizing and setting up monthly meetings for the sightimpaired to share problems, solutions and to socialize at the NM Blind Commission. Virginia Susan B Anthony Powell is related to and named for Susan B Anthony. She was born on Susan B’s 100th birthday, also the same year that women got the vote. She was always very proud to be a relative of Susan B, and equally as proud of the fight she waged for women’s rights. Her grandfather said, "because of this special date she had to be named after Susan B". Due to this unique connection with Susan B Anthony, the Omaha World Herald published the following article. Another Suffragist Arrives Little Virginia Anthony, kin to the late Susan B Anthony, was born Sunday at Clarkson Memorial Hospital, her arrival in this world being coincident with the one hundredth anniversary of the birth of the foremost suffragist in this country. The baby girl is daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond A. Powell and the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Anthony. Mr. J. R. Anthony, a third cousin of Susan Anthony, is said to bear a striking resemblance to the distinguished suffragist. All the kinsfolk, men and women, have kept green the family tradition and have always worked for suffrage. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, her husband, and a daughter, Kathleen. She is survived by her eldest daughter, Susan Blair and her youngest daughter Candy and husband Les Hunt, grandsons Raymond and wife Phyllis Blair, Steven and wife Jennifer Blair, Anthony Bare and wife, Amy, and granddaughter Christina and husband Rob Ciccariello, and eight 9 great-grandchildren. All of the help and TLC that was extended by friends, neighbors, Share Your Care staff, and the Harmony Hospice nurses and aides, has been very much appreciated. Cremation had taken place, no services are planned.
