It’s a 4-peat for Aggie women in WAC golf

MISSION HILLS, Kan. – The New Mexico State women’s golf team won its fourth consecutiv­e Western Athletic Conference women’s golf championsh­ip on Friday, finishing with a 67-over-par score of 907, five strokes clear of runner-up Missouri Kansas City in the seven-team field.

Pan Chanachai, freshman from Banglock, earned medalist honors with a 9-over 219 for the three-round tournament. She shot 73 on Friday and is the third consecutiv­e Aggie to win the individual title.

The team’s three seniors – Kristen Cline, Vale Macias and Camille Orito – complete their NMSU careers winning all four WAC championsh­ips, the first time an Aggie has done so in program history.

New Mexico State women’s golf now moves on to compete in the NCAA Regionals, May 8-10. One of the regionals will be held at the University of New Mexico’s Championsh­ip Course.

Socorro’s Kristen Cline finished in the top-10 as well with scores of 77-75-75—227 (17-over-par) to finish in eighth place. Rio Rancho’s Dominique Galloway posted a 74-81-79 (24-over) to tie for 21st.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL: In Tempe, Ariz., New Mexico (15-10) split its final road performanc­e of the year, falling to No. 19 Arizona State 4-1 before rebounding with a 3-2 victory over No. 20 California.

“I am really happy for our team finally getting that win over a ranked team this season,” New Mexico coach Jeff Nelson said. “We have been in several tight matches and really just pulled out a couple good wins the past two weeks.”

The Lobos close their season today with a 10 a.m./1 p.m. home doublehead­er against Air Force at Lucky 66 Bowl.

BASEBALL: In Las Cruces, Marcel Renteria (6-2) allowed one run and struck out nine in seven innings to lead New Mexico State to a 10-3 win over Northern Colorado (15-20, 4-6 WAC).

Jason Bush drove in three runs and Brent Sakurai and Tristen Carranza each had two RBIs for the Aggies (26-13, 9-1)

SOFTBALL: In Bakersfiel­d, Calif., Kelsey Horton hit her 11th homer, Rachel Rodriguez added three hits, and New Mexico State (21-19, 9-1) opened a three-game Western Athletic Conference series with a 5-2 win over CSU Bakersfiel­d (8-29, 1-9).

Kayla Green (11-11) earned the win, working five innings and overcoming five walks.

The Aggies close the series today with a doublehead­er beginning at 2 p.m. MT.

In Logan, Utah, host Utah State (29-10, 11-4) overcame three errors that led to five unearned runs and defeated New Mexico (19-19, 5-8) 9-7 in their Mountain West Conference series opener. Jasmine Casados homered and drove in three runs for UNM.

MEN’S GOLF: In Tucson, New Mexico is in fifth place of 11 teams after one round of the Mountain West Conference championsh­ips at the OMNI Tucson National Catalina course. The Lobos shot par 288 and are nine strokes behind co-leaders Boise State and San Diego State. UNM’s Andrej Bevins shot 3-under 69 and is in fourth place, three shots off the lead.
