Keuchel, Astros turn away Indians
Giants’ Bumgarner won’t need surgery on shoulder
CLEVELAND — Dallas Keuchel pitched a complete game to extend his promising start to the season and the Houston Astros beat the Cleveland Indians 4-2 on Tuesday night even though Jose Altuve and Teoscar Hernandez left following a frightening collision in the eighth inning.
Altuve and Hernandez were chasing a popup in right field and stayed down for a while afterward. Altuve appeared to get hit near his chin by Hernandez’s arm, but he walked off the field under his own power. Hernandez, called up from the minors before the game, was carted off the field with an injury to his left leg.
Keuchel (4-0) gave up solo homers to Austin Jackson in the third and Michael Brantley in the ninth. The left-hander held Cleveland to six hits and has a 1.22 ERA.
TIGERS 19, MARINERS 9: In Detroit, James McCann, Justin Upton and Alex Avila homered for Detroit — and that was before the Tigers added nine runs in the fifth inning.
RAYS 2, ORIOLES 0: In Baltimore, substitute starter Austin Pruitt combined with four other Tampa Bay relievers on a two-hitter. Rays starter Erasmo Ramirez was a late scratch due to “uncertain weather conditions,” according to the team.
TWINS 8, RANGERS 1: In Arlington, Texas, Ervin Santana delivered his fourth straight outstanding start, Miguel Sano sparked a seven-run fifth inning with a leadoff homer and Minnesota pounded Texas.
WHITE SOX 10, ROYALS 5: In Chicago, Todd Frazier drove in three runs and Leury Garcia had three hits for the White Sox.
DODGERS 2, GIANTS 1: In San Francisco, Clayton Kershaw allowed a run and six hits in seven innings to lift the Dodgers.
NATIONALS 15, ROCKIES 12: In Denver, Trea Turner hit a homer and drove in seven runs and Daniel Murphy added five RBIs for Washington.
DIAMONDBACKS 9, PADRES 3: In Phoenix, Paul Goldschmidt drove in three runs to match a team record with his fourth straight multi-RBI game and Arizona rolled.
BREWERS 9, REDS 1: In Milwaukee, Eric Thames hit his major league-leading 11th home run — his sixth against Cincinnati this season — and the Brewers cruised.
CUBS 1, PIRATES 0: In Pittsburgh, Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks rediscovered his 2016 form, limiting the Pirates to four hits over six innings to outduel Gerrit Cole.
BLUE JAYS 6, CARDINALS 5 (11): In St. Louis, Chris Coghlan made an acrobatic, run-scoring leap over St. Louis All-Star catcher Yadier Molina, and Marcus Stroman came across with the go-ahead run after pinch hitting in the 11th inning and doubling for his first major league hit in Toronto’s win.
RAINOUTS: The Yankees-Red Sox rainout in Boston has been rescheduled as part of a day-night doubleheader on July 16. The Braves-Mets rainout in New York was rescheduled as part of a single-admission doubleheader on Sept. 25 at 4:10 p.m. The Phillies game at Miami was also rained out, with no makeup date immediately announced.
GIANTS: Left-hander Madison Bumgarner will not require surgery on his sprained pitching shoulder and is scheduled to begin light rehabilitation activities in four or five days.
MARLINS: Derek Jeter and Jeb Bush still haven’t touched all the bases in their bid to buy the Marlins. Multiple groups have submitted bids to buy the team, and none has yet been accepted, baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said Tuesday. His comments came after Bloomberg reported a group led by former Yankees captain Jeter and former Florida Gov. Bush won an auction for the team with a $1.3 billion bid.
