SAN DIEGO — After scoring double-digit runs for five consecutive games, the University of New Mexico baseball team failed to scratch out even one in Friday’s opener of three-game series at San Diego State.

Brett Seeburger and three relievers shut out the Lobos (2418-1, 14-3-1 Mountain West) on four hits in a 4-0 Aztecs victory at Tony Gwynn Stadium. No UNM hitter had more than one hit and the Lobos struck out eight times on their way to being shut out for the fourth time this season.

UNM squandered a solid start by pitcher Tyler Stevens, who allowed just two runs and struck out seven through seven innings. Stevens was relieved after allowing a leadoff single to Alan Trejo to start the eighth. Trejo finished 3-for-4 and drove in the game’s first run with a third-inning single.

SDSU (30-13, 14-5) added two gift insurance runs when Lobo reliever Justin Slaten gave up three walks and uncorked three wild pitches in the eighth.

Game 2 of the series is set for today at 3 p.m.

In Hobbs, the University of the Southwest swept Texas A&M Texarkana 6-5 and 3-1 Friday and qualified for the RRAC league tournament.

SOFTBALL: The University of New Mexico got on the scoreboard first with five first-inning runs but couldn’t make that lead hold up and fell 7-6 to visiting San Jose State on Friday.

It was the eighth loss in the last 10 games for the Lobos (20-21, 6-10 Mountain West), who yielded an unearned run in the sixth inning to tie the game and in the seventh to give the Spartans the lead for good.

The Lobos will look to even the series today with a 1 p.m. game, weather permitting.

In Las Cruces, New Mexico State (22-21, 10-3 WAC) trailed 8-0 before scoring seven runs in the fourth inning but Grand Canyon (35-14, 10-3) pulled away for a 14-8 win.
