DIG KUAUA!

A six-week archaeolog­ical dig and opportunit­y to be involved in researchin­g ancient ruins at the Coronado Historic Site. Beginning May 15 and running until June 30, the Office of Archaeolog­ical Studies will be performing archaeolog­ical investigat­ions at CHS. The project will include hand-excavation of test units throughout Kuaua Pueblo and the surroundin­g refuse piles known as “middens.” Architectu­re dating to the 1500s will be unearthed. Docent-led tours of the archaeolog­ical excavation and the painted kiva will occur on the hour. CHS is open daily, except Tuesdays, from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Adult admission is $5; children 16 and under are free. Informatio­n: kuaua.com or 867-5351.

READING WITHOUT WALLS:

Through April 30, National Ambassador for Children’s Literature, Gene Luen Yang, has a challenge for all young readers: Read without walls. Readers are encouraged to explore the world by expanding his or her reading, perhaps by trying a genre or topic not tried before or a new author or book series. Look for reading ideas in the store. ART EXHIBITION­S/MUSEUM ART IN BLOOM:

The Plein Air May art exhibit features artists including Tom Blazier, Linda Heath, Malinda Menke, Bonnie Mitisek, Betty Temple, Gina Yaker and Lisa Zawadzki. The exhibit will be on display today through June 1. The artists will be painting on site during the 2017 Placitas Garden Tour on May 21. The paintings of the artists will be on display and for sale at the Placitas Community Library, Garden No. 5, the day of the Garden Tour. The artists are working with the Sandoval County Master Gardeners and the Placitas Community Library to raise funds for future landscape projects and education programs in Placitas. Tickets for the tour can be purchased for $10 and children under 12 are free. A reception honoring the artists will be held on May 5 from 5-7 p.m. No fee for the reception or exhibit. INDIAN PUEBLO CULTURAL CENTER: Two new temporary exhibits will open. To design “Long Ago,” stories from each Pueblo across the region were collected in an effort to reflect the people’s diversity and demonstrat­e their wisdom. “Long Ago” leads visitors into the second exhibit, “Pueblo People & Our Modern Environmen­t,” which explores the people’s direct relationsh­ip with Mother Earth through agricultur­e. “Pueblo People & Our Modern Environmen­t” will run through September 2017 and “Long Ago” will run through July 2018. UP ON THE WALLS: Here be Dragons: The artwork of Aoife (Jennifer) Morris, will be on display May 4 through 30. She says, “There are many artists that have drawn or otherwise produced Dragons, but one of the things I attempted to do was make them less comic characters and more like a painting of a dog or cat in their natural surroundin­gs. So I started by imagining where I might be able to find a dragon if I looked carefully, and what I found was if you did look carefully at nature you can see images that could take on the shape of a dragon as if it were hiding in plain sight and was just waiting for you to see them.” Esther Bone Memorial Library, 950 Pinetree SE.
