TO OUR READERS
In our cover story, Assistant Arts Editor Kathaleen Roberts previews “Mirror, Mirror … Photographs of Frida Kahlo,” which opens next Saturday at the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art in Santa Fe.
A celebrated painter in Mexico, Kahlo was also one of the most photographed women of her era and the examples in the exhibit display her ever-shifting identity.
Roberts also previews two musical performances, Haydn’s “The Creation” by the New Mexico Symphonic Chorus and “Bach in Spring” by Serenata of Santa Fe.
Features writer Ollie Reed Jr. sets up next weekend’s Rawhide Days festival in Tucumcari, where the eastern New Mexico town recalls the early ’60s TV show that was filmed there. Expect plenty of Old West fun, as well as appearances by some of the offspring of the cast.
Our New Mexico Focus is on a local teacher who is sharing valuable lessons in gratitude with her students. Features writer Rosalie Rayburn chats with Del Norte High School’s Melinda Forward.
David Steinberg reviews “Tending the Fire — Native Voices & Portraits,” which features photographer Christopher Felver’s striking black-and-white portraits along with writings that illuminate the literary contributions of Native Americans.
In Travel, we head to Truth or Consequences and discover what’s behind that quirky name.
Until next week,
Helen Taylor Editor
