Author urges better choices

Fitness is a life-long journey, expert says

- BY NANCY TIPTON OF THE JOURNAL

Mary Jayne Rogers is on a mission to get people to start taking control of their health.

As someone who has worked in the fitness industry for more than 30 years — as a group exercise instructor, strength trainer and as part of a corporate fitness center’s management team — Rogers has become more and more concerned with the state of health in our country.

“Why do we continue to go down this slippery slope of bad eating and a sedentary lifestyle that is ruining our health?” she says.

In her book, “From Overwhelmed to Inspired — Your Personal Guide to Health and Well-Being,” Rogers, who has a Ph.D. in exercise physiology from the University of New Mexico, encourages people to take a simple step-by-step approach to improving the quality of their lives.

She advocates a practice of what she has termed “Three Essentials to Wellness,” — The Three Selfs, compassion for the self and others and mindful awareness.

“Wellness is personal,” she says.

And while the book is full of tools, the heart of the book is to get the readers to look inward to figure out what wellness means to them. And to start that journey.

She is quick to point out that the book is not a diet and exercise book. And it does not provide a quick fix.

“It is meant as the beginning of a journey toward life-long wellness,” she says. “Making even a few better choices can go a long way toward feeling better.”

And she is convinced that a series of small steps is the sea change people need to truly change their lives.

“We all have the ability to do something,” she says. “And I want people to know that working on their health — for them — will be worth it.”
