Montag, Capt. Richard V. (USN, Ret.)

Beloved husband and father, Capt. Richard V. Montag (USN,

Ret.) will be remembered for his deep love of country, church, family, friends, history and horses.

Born in Columbus, OH in 1927, he studied for the priesthood until his early 20’s. Upon leaving the seminary, he earned his Master’s degree from Ohio State University in Political Science. Having served honorably in the US Navy during the Korean War, he returned to civilian life as a professor of Political Science at Mt. St. Joseph, Cincinnati, OH and St. Mary’s College, Moraga, CA. He was called back to active duty as an Associate Professor of Political Science at the Naval Post-graduate School in Monterey, CA, and was subsequent­ly stationed at San Diego, Salem, San Francisco and lastly, Washington D.C., where he retired having attained the rank of Captain.

In retirement he was active in civic projects in Salem, OR, most notably as the co-author of "Project 90" a major economic developmen­t plan and as a consultant to the Salem Police and Fire Department­s. Eventually moving to Albuquerqu­e, NM, Capt. Montag was active in the Prince of Peace Catholic Community.

He died on May 10, 2017 at the age of 89 and is survived by his wife of 64 years, children and grandchild­ren.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, May 18, 2017, 10:00 a.m., at Prince of Peace Catholic Community, 12500 Carmel Ave. NE. Interment will take place privately at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
