TO OUR READERS
All mothers deserve a little pampering today — hint, hint — but the two moms in our cover story have earned a little something extra special. The Jordans — mom Ronna in Farmington and daughter Shonna in Albuquerque — are finishing up seven days of “concrete camping,” a week living on two separate roofs to raise awareness of homelessness and their foundation, Houses With Hope.
Features writer Ollie Reed Jr. chatted with both women, who hope their action inspires other mothers to find a passion to support.
Features writer Elaine D. Briseño previews next weekend’s Fiber Arts Fiesta, which brings hundreds of artisans to Albuquerque to show off their craft. You’ll find quilts, dolls, lace, bead work, painted silk and many more examples of their beautiful handwork.
Assistant Arts Editor Kathaleen Roberts previews “Beads: A Universe of Meaning,” opening today at the Wheelwright Museum in Santa Fe. The exhibit traces the history of imported glass beads as a medium of currency and cultural expression.
Roberts also writes about the New Mexico Philharmonic’s final concerts of the season. They include today’s Mother’s Day concert at the ABQ BioPark Zoo and next weekend’s all-Bach program at the National Hispanic Cultural Center.
David Steinberg reviews “The Radium Girls,” a tragic true story about young women working as watch-dial painters who were poisoned by radioactive radium. Author Kate Moore will discuss and sign the book Monday at the National Museum of Nuclear Science and History.
Until next week,
