Pedestrian struck, killed in North Valley

- JOURNAL STAFF AND WIRE

An 81-year-old man who was crossing Fourth Street was not in a crosswalk when he was hit and killed by a driver in the North Valley on Monday morning, according to the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office.

Spokesman Joshua Campos identified the man who died as Gilberto Marrujo.

Marrujo was walking west across Fourth Street just south of El Pueblo around 7 a.m. when he was hit by a car turning left from El Pueblo to southbound Fourth Street, according to Campos.

The driver had a green light and Marrujo was 20 feet from the nearest crosswalk when he was hit, Campos said.

Marrujo was taken to the University of New Mexico Hospital, where he died.

The driver stayed at the scene and spoke with deputies. He was not charged, Campos said, adding that the case will be sent to the District Attorney’s Office.
