Brewers bash Cubs in makeup game

Dodgers rally in 9th; Rays defeat Sale

-

CHICAGO — The Milwaukee Brewers weren’t happy when the Chicago Cubs decided to postpone a game in May on what turned out to be a totally dry afternoon — especially since the decision cost them a day off.

The Brewers also weren’t pleased the makeup game was scheduled for a 1:20 p.m. CDT start on Thursday after they played a night game in Milwaukee on Wednesday.

They took out their frustrations on the field.

Ryan Braun homered to ignite a seven-run third inning as the Brewers beat the Cubs 11-2 for their fourth straight victory.

Braun went 1-for-2 with two walks and two RBIs before being lifted following the sixth because of the lopsided score. Domingo Santana had four hits and two RBIs, and Jesus Aguilar added three hits and an RBI.

Milwaukee starter Zach Davies (10-4) allowed two runs and five hits in six innings for the win.

“I think as a team we tried to put it on them early and it kind of showed right out of the gate,” Davies said.

“Off days are precious,” Braun said. “You never want to give those away. If you’re going to play on an off day, it’s nice to get a win.”

Cubs starter Mike Montgomery (1-6) gave up seven runs and six hits in 2⅓ innings. DODGERS 5, DIAMONDBACKS

4: In Los Angeles, Chris Taylor’s RBI single capped a four-run ninth as LA beat Arizona. Fernando Rodney, who entered with a three-run lead, blew a save for the fifth time this season.

RAYS 4, RED SOX 1: In St. Petersburg, Fla., Wilson Ramos homered and drove in three runs against Chris Sale despite the All-Star’s record-setting performance, and rookie Jake Faria (4-0) remained unbeaten as Tampa Bay beat Boston.

Sale (11-4) struck out 12 while giving up four runs and seven hits in seven innings. He became the first Red Sox pitcher to strike out 10 or more in 12 games before the All-Star break, surpassing the 11 games of Pedro Martinez in 1999.

Faria has pitched at least six innings in each of his six starts and has a 2.11 ERA.

REDS 6, ROCKIES 3: In Denver, Sal Romano tossed five innings to earn his first major league win as Cincinnati beat Colorado.

Romano (1-1), called up before the game to make his second career start, scattered six hits and allowed two runs to help the Reds split the four-game series.

Adam Duvall hit his 20th home run and drove in two runs and Eugenio Suarez had three hits for Cincinnati. Colorado starter Tyler Chatwood (6-10) allowed seven hits and walked four in six innings.

INDIANS 11, PADRES 2: In Cleveland, Edwin Encarnacion homered and matched a career high with four hits, and Jose Ramirez hit a home run and had three RBIs as Cleveland, playing its third straight game without manager Terry Francona, defeated San Diego.

Francona remained hospitalized at the Cleveland Clinic, where he has been undergoing tests to resolve the causes of him becoming light-headed over the past month. Bench coach Brad Mills has filled in.

Josh Tomlin (5-9) allowed two runs in seven-plus innings. The right-hander retired the first 12 hitters before San Diego scored twice in the fifth.

TIGERS 6, GIANTS 2: In Detroit, Anibal Sanchez pitched six strong innings, and Dixon Machado hit his first career home run to lift Detroit past San Francisco.

Sanchez (1-0) earned his first victory since Aug. 23, allowing two runs and five hits with eight strikeouts and no walks. Sanchez was pitching so poorly this season that he was sent down to Triple-A Toledo, but the 33-year-old righthander has posted a 3.09 ERA in four starts since returning from the minors.

Machado’s first home run came in the 146th at-bat of his career.

BLUE JAYS 7, ASTROS 4: In Toronto, Russell Martin homered and matched a season high with three hits, and Josh Donaldson broke out of his slump with a go-ahead single as Toronto beat Houston.

Francisco Liriano (5-4) pitched six solid innings and Roberto Osuna converted his 21st consecutive save opportunity as the Blue Jays, who began the night last in the AL East, won their third straight.

Houston, which has the best record in the majors at 58-28, had won four in a row and eight of 10.

CARDINALS 4, MARLINS 3: In St. Louis, Luke Voit homered and drove in three runs as the Cardinals beat Miami.

Voit, who also doubled, and third baseman Jedd Gyorko each had two hits.

TWINS 6, ORIOLES 4: In Minneapolis, Eduardo Escobar’s tworun triple highlighted a six-run third inning as Minnesota rallied for a win over Baltimore.

PIRATES 6, PHILLIES 3: In Philadelphia, Gregory Polanco had four hits with a home run and two RBIs as Pittsburgh past Philadelphia.

ATHLETICS 7, MARINERS 4: In Seattle, Khris hit his 24th homer as Oakland beat Seattle.
