Cardinals score 9 in 8th, halt Cubs

Encarnacio­n powers Indians past his former team; Astros edge O’s

CHICAGO — Paul DeJong hit a tie-breaking two-run double in St. Louis’ nine-run eighth inning as the Cardinals cooled off the Chicago Cubs with an 11-4 victory Friday.

Chicago carried a 3-2 lead into the eighth, looking for its seventh straight win. But St. Louis sent 14 batters to the plate, taking advantage of six walks by three relievers to improve to 4-4 since the All-Star break.

Carl Edwards Jr. (3-2) was pulled after the first three batters reached. Hector Rondon then walked Jedd Gyorko, tying it at 3, and DeJong followed with a drive into the ivy in right-center for a ground-rule double.

The Cardinals were off and running from there. Carson Kelly hit a two-run double and Tommy Pham’s two-run single made it 11-3.

INDIANS 13, BLUE JAYS 3: In Cleveland, Edwin Encarnacio­n homered and drove in four runs against his former team, and Cleveland broke open a close game with an eight-run seventh inning to rout Toronto.

Encarnacio­n, who played the last six seasons with the Blue Jays before signing a three-year deal with Cleveland in January, hit a leadoff home run in the second, broke a 3-all tie in the fifth with a two-run double and added an RBI single in the seventh.

ASTROS 8, ORIOLES 7: In Baltimore, rookie Yuli Gurriel had a career-high four hits, including a home run, and Houston received a gritty pitching performanc­e from Mike Fiers in a victory.

Colin Moran hit his first major league homer and first triple for Houston, and Brian McCann also went deep.

The Astros took an 8-2 lead into the ninth before Adam Jones hit a two-run double off James Hoyt and Jonathan Schoop homered with two on against Chris Devenski. DIAMONDBAC­KS 6, NATIONALS 5: In

Phoenix, David Peralta, A.J. Pollock and Jake Lamb hit back-to-back-to-back home runs for Arizona to start the first inning against Washington star Max Scherzer en route to a walk-off victory.

The feat was the first in the majors since Baltimore did it against Texas in 2012.

Brandon Drury’s hit a one-out, bases-loaded single in the ninth .

PIRATES 13, ROCKIES 5: In Denver, rookie Josh Bell had a career-high four hits, and Andrew McCutchen had three hits as Pittsburgh beat Colorado.

Rookie Trevor Williams overcame a rough start to pitch 6⅔ strong innings for his first win in more than a month. Pittsburgh has won a season-high six straight.

BRAVES 12, DODGERS 3: In Los Angeles, the Braves got homers from Jaime Garcia, Tyler Flowers and Freddie Freeman in a rout of LA.

Dodgers left-hander Alex Wood (11-1) gave up nine runs (seven earned) in 4⅔ innings.

TIGERS 6, TWINS 3: In Minneapoli­s, Victor Martinez hit two home runs as Detroit beat Minnesota.

Anibal Sanchez (2-0) gave up three runs and six hits with five strikeouts and three walks in 5⅔ innings for the Tigers, who lost star Miguel Cabrera to a right clavicle contusion in the fourth inning. Cabrera had X-rays that were negative and is listed as day-to-day.

PHILLIES 6, BREWERS 1: In Philadelph­ia, Aaron Nola tied a career-high with nine strikeouts in seven sharp innings and Freddy Galvis hit a two-run homer as Philadelph­ia beat Milwaukee.

Nola (7-6) allowed one run and five hits The Brewers have lost six in a row.

METS 7, ATHLETICS 5: In New York, Michael Conforto hit a pair of two-run homers and Jerry Blevins rescued the Mets’ bullpen with a five-out save as New York held off Oakland for its third straight victory.

T.J. Rivera put the Mets ahead in the sixth inning with a two-run single that turned into a Little League home run. Rivera came all the way around to score on the play after third baseman Matt Chapman, trying to get Rivera at second, threw the ball away into right field for an error that made it 5-3.

RANGERS 4, RAYS 3 (10): In St. Petersburg, Fla., Elvis Andrus homered early and then snapped a 10th-inning tie with a twoout infield single that gave Texas a victory over Tampa Bay. MARLINS 3, REDS 1: In Cincinnati, Jose Urena pitched three-hit ball into the seventh inning and Christian Yelich drove in two runs as Miami opened a six-game trip with a rain-delayed victory over Cincinnati.

ROYALS 7, WHITE SOX 6: In Kansas City, Mo, Whit Merrifield’s sacrifice fly in the 10th inning lifted KC past Chicago.

YANKEES 5, MARINERS 1: In Seattle, Aaron Judge his his league-leading 31st homer to back the pitching of CC Sabathia (9-3) as New York beat Seattle.
