Love in New York

New Netflix film features friendship and romance

-

WHAT’S NEW:

Fans of romantic comedies will love this new film about a writer who has recently broken up with her boyfriend. As she struggles to adapt to her new single life, she meets a man who could be “the one” — or maybe just a rebound. It’s hard to say. “The Incredible Jessica James” (2017) stars Jessica Williams (“Girls”) as the titular heroine, a young playwright in New York City whose love life and art intertwine. Chris O’Dowd (“Moone Boy”) and Noel Wells (“Master of None”) round out the headlining cast. The film premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, where it received favorable reviews, and has enjoyed overwhelmingly positive reviews since (it has a 95 percent fresh score on Rottentomatoes, for example). Make sure you catch “The Incredible Jessica James” when it premieres Friday, July 28, on Netflix.

BINGE THIS:

Fans of 1930s Hollywood will want to tune into the new drama premiering on Amazon Prime. “The Last Tycoon” is an adaptation of the unfinished novel of the same name by American novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald and tells the story of a man trying to make his way in showbusiness in that

nostalgic time period. Matt Bomer (“White Collar”) stars as Monroe Stahr, a widower and film producer struggling to please his more experienced mentor, Pat Brady (Kelsey Grammer, “Frasier”). Bomer certainly provides eye candy that will reel viewers in, but his impressive acting chops are also on full display, and it’s impossible not to be taken in by his portrayal of the tragic leading man. Also starring Lily Collins (“Okja,” 2017), Dominique McElligott (“Hell on Wheels”), Mark O’Brien (“Republic of Doyle”), Enzo Cilenti (“Game of Thrones”) and Rosemarie DeWitt (“The United States of Tara”), the sweeping period drama premieres Friday, July 28, on Amazon Prime.

Season 2 of “Betch” is available for streaming on Hulu as of Friday, July 28, and comedy fans will want to check this one out. “Betch” is a sketch comedy series starring a group of women who call themselves “the betches.” The program frequently features celebrity hosts who participate in sketches alongside stars Monica Sherer (“Foursome”), Madeline Whitby (“Awesomeness TV”) and Audrey Whitby (“The Thundermans”). Though it may seem as if the term “betches” is intended as a derogatory term, these hilarious stars turn the euphemism on its head, using it as a term of endearment — in fact, the term was chosen as the title for the show because betch rhymes with sketch, which, of course, is what the show is comprised of. These dynamic women use every episode to challenge stereotypes through satire, often underlining the fact that women can be as multifaceted as men — they can be both concerned with their looks and highly intelligent, for example. The comedy is consistently hilarious, and the more you watch, the more you’ll love the women who make up this team. Catch the new season of “Betch,” when it premieres Friday, July 28, on Hulu.
