Get APS school menus with YumYummi mobile app

Radio broadcasting class, graduation info also available

- JOURNAL STAFF REPORT

Albuquerque Public Schools has announced a plan for making it easier for parents and students to find out what’s on the school lunch menu. It also announced an eight-week radio broadcasting course for students and the community. And below are next year’s graduation dates, places and times.

The district recently launched the YumYummi mobile app, which lists each school’s menus daily, weekly or monthly.

It also identifies dishes containing allergens like dairy, eggs, fish, peanuts, pork, shellfish, soy, tree nuts and wheat/gluten.

The YumYummi site and app allow students to rate the food, and APS will consider that feedback when it puts together future menus.

Menus are also posted to each school’s website and at APS.edu.

“We wanted to personalize the menus as much as possible,” said Sandra Kemp, executive director of APS Food and Nutrition Services, in a press release. “We’re also now able to update the menus so they will be accurate.”

APS’ radio station, 89.1 KANW-FM, is offering an eight-week radio broadcasting course for students and the community.

It meets Sept. 19 to Nov. 9 at 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the KANW studios, 2020 Coal Ave. SW.

The class is free for APS high school seniors and $300 for non-APS students and adults ages 17 and older. A valid student ID is required to have the course fee waived.

Those who complete the course will have the opportunity to gain more experience by volunteering on-air at KANW.

“It is an opportunity for high school seniors or adults to train on actual broadcast equipment, learn about music selection, voice techniques, HD radio, and FCC rules and regulations,” said KANW program director Kevin Otero, in a press release.

To register, go to www. kanw.com or contact Otero at 242-7163 or kevin. otero@aps.edu.

KANW has been on the air for more than 65 years and was New Mexico’s first FM radio station. It carries both NPR, PRI, BBC, and American Public Media programs, and now includes 2 HD radio stations.
