Girl rescued after locking herself in safe

Police say an 11-year-old girl had to be rescued after locking herself inside a gun safe at an Albuquerque warehouse store Saturday.

Officers quickly responded to the call around 11:50 a.m. at the Costco on Eubank and Southern SE and found store personnel trying to open the safe, said officer Simon Drobik, an Albuquerque police spokesman.

Firefighters, Pop-A-Lock, and a local safe store were also dispatched.

Drobik said a Costco employee opened the safe around noon, and the girl was checked and cleared at the scene.

“No charges are pending due to the child stepping into the safe and closing the door behind her,” he said, adding that the incident serves as “a reminder to the public to always practice safety around large safes.”
