Susan (Sue) Lombard Horsley Campbell died on September 5th, 2017, in Yakima, Washington, after a brief illness. Born on September 13, 1928, to F. Sears and Helen
May (Garretson) Horsley, Sue was reared and educated in Selah and Yakima, graduating from Selah High School in 1946. She attended Whitman College (Walla Walla, Washington) before graduating from the University of Washington in 1950, with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology.
She married John (Jack) Martin Campbell, of Selah, in 1949, on the Garretson ranch in Yakima. In 19501951 Sue and Jack moved to Albuquerque, while Jack was enrolled in the Anthropology graduate program at the University of New Mexico - initiating Sue’s life-long enchantment with the state. During the Korean War, Jack and Sue were posted to the Philippines, where their first child, Donald MacIver Campbell II, was born in 1953. After the War, they lived in New Haven, Connecticut, while Jack obtained his Ph.D. in Anthropology from Yale University and where their daughter, Jane Alice Campbell, was born in 1956. From 1959-1964, they lived in Chevy Chase, Maryland, while Jack was on the Anthropology faculty at the George Washington University, and where their third child, Jill Caroline Campbell, was born in 1960. In 1964, they moved back to New Mexico, settling in Corrales. While Jack was chairman of the Anthropology department at the University of New Mexico, Sue remained at home to rear the children. Sue and Jack were divorced in 1977. Sue went to work at the age of 43 for the Albuquerque Public Schools until she retired in the 1990’s. Her longtime friend and traveling companion, in later years, was the notable architect, Nat P. Kaplan of Los Ranchos Village. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority, an early and long-time volunteer librarian at the Corrales Community Library, a member of the board of the Adobe Theater at the Old Corrales Church, and was involved with the Corrales Historical Society, as well as being a lifelong birder. Although she was wont to say, "You can’t go home again after living in New Mexico," she ultimately did move back to her hometown in 2010. In Yakima, she joined the Narcissa Whitman Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. (Her grandmother Angenette Lombard Horsley and her great aunt and namesake, Susan (Sue) Lombard Horsley were founding members of the chapter with Sue serving as the first regent in 1909.)
Survivors include her son, Don (Patti) of Reno, Nevada, daughter Jane (Peter M. Whiteley) of Yonkers, New York, daughter Jill Farris of Pasco, Washington, eleven grandchildren, one great-grandchild, her sister-in-law Lorna Campbell Dempsey (Dr. R. H. Dempsey) and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents, her brother Garretson Horsley and sister-in-law Alice, Nat Kaplan, her ex-husband, and a grandson, Ian Thomas Campell.
As she wished, there are to be no formal funeral services. A family gathering and celebration of her life is planned for early summer of 2018 in Yakima. Memorial contributions may be made to "The library that the people built": Corrales Community Library, 84 W. La Entrada Road., Corrales, 87048.
