Trevor Hall enjoys setting his own pace as independent artist

Trevor Hall believes the best thing about being on tour is the act of sharing.

Whether it’s energy or music, it’s what makes the 30-year-old musician happy.

Recently, there have been a number of changes in Hall’s life, as he’s released “The Fruitful Darkness Part One.” The body of work is the first of a four-part musical series.

It’s also his first independent project. “It’s exciting, because we have a little more freedom and more time to call our own shots,” he says in a recent phone interview from his Colorado home. “To have that freedom is great. To make music in a different way, it’s something we’re looking forward to.”

With the first part of the project out now, Hall says, the second part will be released in November, then the third in January and the fourth will be in March or April.

The impetus behind the strategy is to slow down the music intake.

“We’re able to give each song its proper attention,” he says. “When you record a whole album, sometimes songs get lost and stories don’t get told. Each part of the series will have three songs. This will give the listener the opportunity to fully take the music. These days, our attention spans aren’t that long anymore.”

Hall is recognized for his music — which is a mix of roots, folk and reggae. He often has themes that revolve around spirituality and life exploration. In fact, in 2013, Hall went on a pilgrimage to India, where he spent weeks studying under a classical Baul musician.

He has released seven full-length albums, as well as two EPs.

And life on the road is what Hall prefers.

“It’s a different rhythm,” he says of touring. “There’s a joy to being on the road and playing music every night. It’s very uplifting because it’s helping unify the audience. That being said, sleep goes out the window. If I try to come up with a schedule, I usually get frustrated. Part of the way of staying sane is not being attached to your sanity.”

One aspect of his career Hall finds stressful is putting together a set list.

“The audience wants to hear so many different things,” he says. “You want people to enjoy their time with you. There is a beautiful freedom and diversity that you can create for every show. That’s my goal.”
