INDIE ROCK, LIGHTS

Iron & Wine, Chinese Lantern Festival on tap

- ADRIAN GOMEZ

Sam Beam has never been afraid to share something.

Whether it was through his poetry or his music, it’s something that he’s never given a second thought.

“I draw a lot from my personal life,” he says. “To a point, I’m worried about what people think. Maybe they think of my songs as diary entries. But they’re not. They are a piece of my life.”

Beam is the mastermind behind the indie rock project Iron & Wine.

He is currently on tour in support of his new album, “Beast Epic.”

“The sound of ‘Beast Epic’ harks back to previous work, in a way, as well,” he says. “By employing the old discipline of recording everything live and doing minimal overdubbing, I feel like it wears both its achievements and its imperfections on its sleeve. Over the years, I’ve enjoyed experimenting with different genres, sonics and songwriting styles, and all that traveled distance is evident in the feel and the arrangements here, but the muscles seemed to have relaxed and been allowed to effortlessly do what they do best.”

Beam will perform at El Rey Theater on Monday, Oct. 30. To read more, see Page 21.

The nights are cooler and dry, so take a trip to Expo New Mexico to see the New Mexico Chinese Lantern Festival. The grounds are lit up by more than 30 light displays, which focus on Chinese culture. To read more about the festival, see Pages 14-15.

Staff writer Rozanna M. Martinez was able to catch up with Dream Theater’s James LaBrie. The band is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its landmark album “Images and Words.” To read more on what LaBrie has to say, see Page 12.

We’ve got reviews on M’Tucci’s Moderno in Rio Rancho on Page 16. And make sure to check out the reviews for “Goodbye Christopher Robin” on Page 4 and “Thank You for Your Service” on Page 6.
