Colorado State hands rival Buffaloes 1st loss

Arizona goes to overtime, beats UNLV; Nevada improves to 8-0 with road win

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — J.D. Paige and Prentiss Nixon each scored 16 points and Colorado State held on to beat Colorado 72-63 on Saturday morning.

Che Bob had 11 points and Deion James added eight points and 10 rebounds for the Rams (4-4), who beat their in-state rival for a second straight year.

McKinley Wright IV led Colorado with 19 points, including 11 straight points in less than two minutes to help the Buffaloes cut a 17-point deficit to 63-57 with 5:26 remaining.

Colorado (6-1) hosts New Mexico Wednesday. Among other state and Mountain West teams:

ARIZONA 91, UNLV 88 (OT): In Las Vegas, Nev., Allonzo Trier scored eight of his team-high 29 points in overtime to lead Arizona (5-3), which shot 62 percent (18 of 29) in the second half. Brandon McCoy led UNLV (6-2) with a game-high 33 points and 10 rebounds.

AIR FORCE 61, DENVER 59: In Denver, Ryan Manning scored 19 points, Pervis Louder 14 including a game-winning dunk with four seconds left as Air Force (4-3) squeaked past Denver.

SOUTHERN ILLINOIS 76, SAN JOSE STATE 58: In Carbondale, Ill., Kavion Pippen scored 22 points with four steals for the Salukis (4-2). Jaycee Hillsman scored 15 points off the bench for SJSU.

WYOMING 96, DRAKE 89 (2OT): In Laramie, Wyo., Alan Herndon scored a career-high 32 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Wyoming (6-2). Reed Timmer had a double-double for the Bulldogs (4-3) with 28 points and 10 rebounds.

NEVADA 76, UC IRVINE 65: In Irvine, Calif., Jordan Caroline poured in 24 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and handed out four assists to help Nevada (8-0) win its sixth straight road game. Eyassu Worku had 13 points to pace the Anteaters (4-6),

FRESNO STATE 106, LONG BEACH STATE 70: In Long Beach, Calif., Jaron Hopkins scored 26 points, Deshon Taylor added 23 points and Fresno State (6-2) was never threatened by LBSU (3-5).

FORT LEWIS 91, NMHU 79: In Las Vegas, N.M., Jordan Jones scored 17 points to lead four Highlands (5-3, 0-2 RMAC) double-figure scorers, but the Skyhawks (5-1, 2-0) shot 59 percent from the field.

BYU 75, UTAH STATE 66: In Logan, Utah, Yoeli Childs and McKay Cannon each scored 17 points and BYU (6-2) won its third straight. Koby McEwen led Utah State (4-5) with 20 points.

Other men’s games

No. 1 DUKE 96, SOUTH DAKOTA 80: Grayson Allen scored 15 of his 25 points in an 8-minute opening blitz for the Blue Devils (10-0), who gave up 50 second-half points.

No. 20 ARIZONA ST. 75, SAN FRANCISCO 57: In Tempe, Ariz., redshirt freshman Romello White scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the Sun Devils (7-0).

TEXAS PERMIAN BASIN 89, WNMU 47: In Silver City, the No. 18 (NCAA Division II) and the defending Lone Star champion Falcons (7-1, 2-0) shot 56 percent to bury Western New Mexico (2-6, 0-2). Willie McCray’s 16 points led the Mustangs (2-6, 0-2).

WEST TEXAS A&M 99, ENMU 69: In Portales, Lamarquis Thompson had 13 points but Eastern New Mexico (3-5, 0-2 Lone Star) gave up 14 3-pointers and was routed by the No. 8 D-II Buffaloes (8-0, 2-0).

State women

UT PERMIAN BASIN 69, WNMU 54: In Silver City, Cassandra Vickery’s nine points led Western New Mexico (0-7, 0-2 Lone Star). Sierra LaGrande hit six 3-pointers and a game-high 20 points for UTPB.

No. 5 WEST TEXAS A&M 61, ENMU 44: In Portales, Eastern New Mexico shot only 24 percent from the field, was 1-of-22 on 3-pointers and fell to the nationally ranked Buffaloes (7-0, 2-0 Lone Star). Mikaehla Connor’s 11 points led the Greyhounds (3-4, 0-2).
