Country, holiday shows

Songwriter Kasey Tyndall, Brian Setzer’s ‘Christmas Rocks’ coming

- ADRIAN GOMEZ

Kasey Tyndall had plans to be a nurse.

But the idea was halted when the songwriter won a contest in Raleigh, N.C., to sing a duet with country superstar Keith Urban a few years ago.

The now 21-year-old musician is touring in support of her debut album, “Between Salvation and Survival.”

“I’ve actually dreamed of being a singer since I was a little girl,” she admits. “It was always a dream that seemed out of reach. The moment singing with Keith made it a reality. I haven’t always worked for this dream, but now I’m getting a head start.”

Tyndall snagged the opening slot on country band Parmalee’s current tour. The tour makes a stop on Saturday, Dec. 9, at the Historic El Rey Theater. To read more on Tyndall’s rise, see Page 22.

Holiday events are popping up around the state.

Arts writer Rozanna M. Martinez writes about the annual Light Among the Ruins, which takes place in Jemez Pueblo. Last year, the event welcomed more than 3,000 people to see farolitos placed among the ancient ruins. To read more, see Pages 14-15.

And the holiday spirit is going strong with the New Mexico Gay Men’s Chorus. I caught up with artistic director Aaron Howe, who discussed playing the Lensic for the first time in Santa Fe. To read more on the chorus, see Page 13.

For more than a decade, the Brian Setzer Orchestra has been taking the holidays on tour. His latest “Christmas Rocks!” tour makes a stop in Albuquerque on Saturday, Dec. 9, at Isleta Resort and Casino. I caught up with Setzer and he discussed his love for music. To read more, see Page 20.
