Free refrigerators donated by PNM
PNM has announced that 1,033 Albuquerque low-income customers had brand-new, energy-efficient refrigerators delivered free of charge to their homes after PNM hauled away their old units to be recycled.
Between 2016 and 2017, the PNM Multifamily and PNM Home Energy Checkup energyefficiency programs worked with the Albuquerque Housing Authority to identify incomequalified customers whose refrigerators were at least 10 years old or had Energy Star units that were more than 15 years old. Pickups of old units were coordinated with residents, hauled off to be recycled, then replaced for free with a brandnew, more efficient refrigerator that uses much less electricity to operate. Many of these customers also received free energy-efficient lighting, smart power strips, LED night lights, and more to help them save energy and money.
“Many of the customers were worried about how they will keep their food fresh and milk cold,” said PNM Vice President of External Affairs, Becky Teague. “Being able to deliver a new refrigerator, relieve the burden of hauling their old unit away, and ultimately helping them save energy and money — both of which are at the very core of what PNM energyefficiency programs are all about.”
PNM is currently working with other housing authorities around the state to expand this service in 2018 to other customers who are incomequalified and live in the PNM service area. Customers wishing to participate in these PNM energy efficiency programs should call 888-DIAL-PNM.
Since 2007, PNM energyefficiency programs have provided more than $67 million in customer rebates and helped save almost 2.6 billion kilowatt hours of electricity – enough to power approximately 378,000 homes for a year. These programs have kept an estimated 1.6 million metric tons of carbon dioxide out of the air and saved 876 million gallons of water.
