No. 1 loses; no unbeaten teams remain

TUCSON — Deandre Ayton had 23 points and 19 rebounds, including a crucial tip-in with 11 seconds to go, as No. 17 Arizona held on to hand No. 3 Arizona State its first loss of the season, 84-78 on Saturday night.

Allonzo Trier, who missed his first six shots but finished with 23 points, made a pair of free throws to put the Wildcats (11-3) ahead 82-78 with 10.3 seconds to go in the teams’ Pac-12 opener and one of the most anticipate­d matchups in the rivalry’s history.

Arizona withstood a 31-point performanc­e by the Tra Holder of the Sun Devils (12-1), including 15 of 16 free throws. But the other two usually sharpshoot­ing Arizona State guards, Shannon Evans and Cody Justice, were a combined 5-for-23 shooting, 2-for-14 on 3-pointers.

Arizona State’s loss left no unbeaten teams remaining in NCAA Division I after No. 1 Villanova and No. 10 TCU lost earlier in the day.

BUTLER 101, No. 1 VILLANOVA 93: In Indianapol­is, Kelan Martin scored 24 points and Paul Jorgensen had a careerhigh 23 to help Butler (12-3, 2-0 Big East) end Villanova’s (13-1, 1-1) perfect start for a second consecutiv­e season.

No. 4 DUKE 100, No. 24 FLORIDA STATE 93: In Durham, N.C., freshman Marvin Bagley III had 32 points and a season-best 21 rebounds for Duke (13-1, 1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference). FSU (11-2, 0-1) led 91-89 but missed its last eight shots.

No. 12 OKLAHOMA 90, No. 10 TCU 89: In Fort Worth, freshman Trae Young scored 39 points and had 14 assists as Oklahoma (11-1, 1-0 Big 12) overcame a 13-point deficit to end the nation’s longest winning streak at 17. Kenrick Williams’ 22 points led TCU (12-1, 0-1).

MWC/region men

BOISE STATE 83, UNLV 74: In Las Vegas, Nev., Chandler Hutchison scored eight of his season-high 32 points in the final three minutes to help Boise State (122, 2-0 MWC) beat UNLV (11-3, 0-1).

Hutchinson was 13-of-18 shooting, and Zach Haney finished with 11 points and a career-high 11 rebounds. Shakur Juiston finished with 25 points and Jordan Johnson scored 20 for UNLV. Brandon McCoy added 16 and 10 rebounds.

COLORADO STATE 59, SAN JOSE

STATE 52: In San Jose, Calif., Prentiss Nixon scored 19 points for Colorado State (8-7, 1-1 Mountain West). Ryan Welage scored 16 points for the Spartans (3-10, 0-2), who are 0-16 vs. the Rams.

FRESNO STATE 71, AIR FORCE 59: In Fresno, Calif., Deshon Taylor scored 18 points, and Fresno State (11-4, 1-1 MWC) shot 53 percent (25 of 47) from the field. Ryan Swan led Air Force (6-8, 0-2) with 13 points.

SAN DIEGO STATE 79, UTAH STATE 59: In San Diego, Devin Watson scored 15 points for the Aztecs (9-4, 1-1 MW). Sam Merrill scored 18 for Utah State (8-7, 1-1).

ENMU 82, LUBBOCK CHRISTIAN 73: In Lubbock, Texas, Zach Parker’s 3-pointer with just over 10 minutes to play gave Eastern New Mexico (5-8) the lead for good, and his 20 points shared team-high honors with Jamani Pierce in defeating Lubbock Christian (4-9).

WNMU 78, EMBRY RIDDLE 58: In Silver City, Davis Wade hit six oif his team’s 11 3-pointers as Western New Mexico (3-10) topped Embry Riddle (7-5).

NMHU 75, S.D. SCHOOL MINES-TECHNOLOGY 67: In Rapid City, S.D., 6-foot-7 Nmamdi Okoro scored 25 points on 12-of18 shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Highlands (9-4, 4-3 RMAC) over the Hardrocker­s (6-6, 3-4).

Women

LUBBOCK CHRISTIAN 64, ENMU 55: In Portales, Mikaehla Connor scored 15 points and a team-high seven rebounds for Eastern New Mexico (5-6), which shot 29 percent from the field and fell to NCAA Division II’s No. 4 Lubbock Christian (12-1).

S.D. SCHOOL MINES-TECHNOLOGY 86, NMHU 47: In Rapid City, S.D., the Hardrocker­s (9-4, 4-3 RMAC) shot 59 percent from the field, hit 15 3s and beat Highlands (4-8, 2-5).
