SPORTS SPEAK UP!
I WOULD LIKE to comment on the photo and caption of ABQ’s new mayor on Page 1 of the New Year’s Eve Journal. Mr. Keller was shown proudly displaying the helmet he wore playing quarterback for St. Pius X, pointing out the marks from the hits he took to his head. Knowing what we do about such things today, I think that explains a lot. — Brian, Albuquerque
SPORTS’ BIGGEST mystery: how do you pronounce Alex Lapeyrolerie’s last name? — Jack Bowers, Albuquerque
WHETHER TO dismiss Davie is not a question of if UNM can afford but whether UNM can afford not to do so. As the painful six years have shown, the game has truly passed Coach Davie by, and the standard for what is “acceptable” cannot be Mike Locksley (despite many local folks’ continuing inferiority complex, as evidenced in their emails to Sports Speak Up!). Anyone here deny what happened with a coaching change at Fresno (1-11 to 10-3) or Central Florida (0-12 to 12-0)? — Long-time Lobo Football Fanatic
THE LOBOS DESPERATELY
need a presence in the low post offensively. We need another Tim Williams badly. Physically, Sam Logwood, Joe Furstinger, or Vladimir Pinchuk could get the job done but would need coaching to develop some low post moves, go up strong, and without hesitation. Of those three, only Pinchuk will be around next year and is the logical choice to work with longer term, unless Paul Weir has someone coming in who could fill that role.
