CATCHES OF THE WEEK

Kinsey Hartman of Alamogordo caught a 21-inch drum Jan. 13 at Caballo Lake. She was using a worm.

Shane Bell, 13, of Los Lunas, caught a 19½-inch white bass Dec. 30 at Elephant Butte Lake. He was trolling a white Bomber crank bait.

Trout fishing at TINGLEY BEACH’S Youth and Central ponds was good using PowerBait, Fire Balls, wax worms, woolly buggers and Pistol Petes. Fishing at the Bob Gerding Catch and Release Pond was good using San Juan worms, small small streamers and custom tied nymphs for trout. Fishing in the ALBUQUERQU­E, BERNALILLO, BELEN and PERALTA DRAINS was very good using meal worms, PowerBait, corn, Berkley trout worms and Fire Balls for trout. Fishing at FENTON LAKE was very good using garlic, salmon peach, rainbow and green PowerBait for trout. The best reports came from anglers fishing just off the bottom. Fishing at JACKSON LAKE was rated as good to excellent by anglers using PowerBait and Fire Balls for trout. Fishing at LAKE FARMINGTON was very good using salmon egg corn combinatio­ns, salmon eggs and PowerBait for trout. Stream flow on the SAN JUAN RIVER on Monday morning was 387 cfs and visibility was about one foot. Fly fishing action through the quality waters was fair to good using OJs, desert storms, egg patterns, olive and black woolly buggers, bunny leeches and San Juan worms. Trout fishing through the bait waters was fair using night crawlers, PowerBait, worms and small spoons. Fishing at ELEPHANT BUTTE LAKE was fair using curly tail grubs, small swim baits, jigging spoons and Super Dupers for walleye. Fishing was fair using blade baits, spoons, curly tail grubs and deep diving crank baits for white bass. At LAKE ALICE, ice conditions have deteriorat­ed, and the lake has closed to ice fishing. For updated ice conditions, call the state park office at 575-445-5607. At LAKE MALOYA, trout fishing was very good for anglers using PowerBait and corn. As of Sunday, there was plenty of open water for bank fishing. As of Sunday, there was open water in some areas of EAGLE NEST LAKE, and it is closed to fishing. For updated ice conditions, contact the state park office at 575-377-1594. At STORRIE LAKE, fishing was slow for all species. Some ice has been forming along the edges of the lake, but it has been gone by late morning leaving the lake open to bank fishing. For updated ice conditions, call the state park office at 505-425-7278. Streamflow on the PECOS RIVER near Pecos on Monday was 21.0 cfs. Fishing downstream from the village of Pecos to Villanueva was good using salmon eggs and PowerBait for trout. Stream flow on the RIO GRANDE on Monday at the Taos Junction Bridge was 459 cfs. Fishing in the Taos area was slow, but a few rainbows and browns were caught by anglers using San Juan worms, small streamers, poundmeist­ers, small dry flies and salmon eggs for rainbow and small brown trout. Fishing through the Albuquerqu­e area was slow to fair using night crawlers and prepared baits for catfish. Stream flow on the RIO GRANDE below Elephant Butte Monday morning was 0.57 cfs. Fishing was good using PowerBait, worms and Fire Balls for trout. A few catfish were caught by anglers using night crawlers and homemade dough baits. Fishing for trout at ALUMNI POND was very good during the week but slowed over the weekend. Anglers did best using PowerBait and salmon eggs. At BILL EVANS LAKE, fishing was good using PowerBait, Fire Balls and Kastmaster­s for trout. Fishing at ESCONDIDA LAKE was good using PowerBait, Zeke’s trout bait and meal worms for trout. At GLENWOOD POND, fishing was very good using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. Trout fishing at ALTO LAKE was good using PowerBait and salmon eggs. Trout fishing at BLUE HOLE PARK POND was good for anglers using garlic PowerBait and salmon eggs. Fishing at BOSQUE REDONDO LAKE was good using salmon eggs, meal worms and PowerBait for trout. At CHAPARRAL PARK LAKE, fishing was good using salmon eggs and PowerBait for trout. Fishing at GREEN MEADOW LAKE was good using PowerBait for trout. At GREEN ACRES LAKE, fishing was good using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. Fishing at GRINDSTONE RESERVOIR was good using garlic and salmon peach PowerBait, Gulp trout dough and salmon eggs for trout. Stream flow on the PECOS RIVER below Sumner Lake on Monday was 21.4 cfs. Fishing was good using Pistol Petes and PowerBait for trout. At SUMNER LAKE, fishing was fair to good using jigs, blade baits and bottom bouncer rigs for walleye. At CONCHAS LAKE, fishing was slow to fair using spoons, blade baits and curly tail grubs, for a mixed bag of walleye and white bass.
